TRURO Police Station is set to be demolished to make way for retirement apartments.

Churchill Retirement has announced plans to replace the building off the Trafalgar roundabout with more than 50 apartments.

When the West Briton revealed in December the police's plans to move to Castle House, behind Truro Crown Court, the force did not respond to enquiries regarding the sale price of the station.

Churchill Retirement Living is holding a public exhibition of the proposals at the Alverton on Tregolls Road at 5pm next Wednesday.

Planning Issues Ltd, which is handling the planning application, said its design would "relate sensitively to the adjacent buildings and respect the natural environment" providing "a pleasant and safe environment for the prospective residents as well as making a positive contribution to the character and appearance of the local area".

After the news broke at www.westbriton.co.uk, Doomdealer wrote: "Shocking, another irreplaceable building is brought to the ground – just because it is classic 1960s-70s style ... what if we had demolished all the 1930s art deco buildings because they didn't look 'right' in the 1950s? Greed wins again."

Mounty added: "Thank goodness. One of the most ugliest buildings ever erected. A blot on the landscape!"

In July 2009 planning permission was granted to demolish the building and create a new office block and police station.

But in May 2011 the force decided to sell the site.

A spokesman previously said the station was "inefficient" in terms of space and energy use. Refurbishment alone would have cost about £2 million over the next ten years, without any significant improvements.

The new site, opposite the Viaduct car park, was bought for £382,500, excluding taxes.

The police said the move could save up to £50,000 per year. The new premises have about 380m² of usable space, compared to the existing area of approximately 750m².

The police added that there would be no impact on the number of officers operating out of the station. Disruption arising from the move would be minimal as it was hoped the new station would be up and running before closing the existing station, from early 2014.
