MORE THAN 20 boats crafted from paper and wood set sail on the Rotary Boating Pool today as part of the Golowan celebrations.
Model boat enthusiasts and enthusiastic amateurs gathered for the annual event as part of Golowan and tested out their colourful craft.
Buckets of pebbles were shipped across from nearby Wherrytown beach to act as ballast as sails were adjusted and trim set.
One of the finest vessels was the galleon Shallal - a beautiful three master made by Colin and Rowan Curbishley.
The pair spent more than 12 hours on the boat named after the dance theatre company Colin works for.
He said: "Rowan is only four and a half but we came up with the design together, he wanted it to be a galleon, and he covered the hull himself. She sailed really well, especially once the wind caught her."
Modelling groups also put on shows and displayed some of their most ambitious creations.
Richard Keast from Hayle Model Boat Club brought a number of boats including his working replica of the former Padstow RNLI lifeboat Spirit of Padstow.
The boat took nine months to build and includes a working sound system.
He said: "Everything works, the engine, lights, even the radar. I'm retired so I can afford to spend the time doing it. They take a huge amount of time to get right."
