Redruth has been revealed as the 'most Cornish' town in Cornwall with more than one in five people classing their national identity as Cornish. Those who apparently associate themselves the least with the duchy are the residents of Saltash, where fewer than one in 20 see themselves as Cornish. Village areas such as Troon and Beacon, Carn Brea and St Dennis also boast a high proportion of patriotic Cornishmen and women. The statistics have been made available through the Government's Office for National Statistics (ONS) and are based on the 2011 national census. People up and down the country were asked to answer a host of questions about themselves and their lives to paint an accurate picture of modern Britain and shape future planning. The national identity question included six 'tick box' responses - one for each of the four parts of the UK (English, Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish), one for British, and one for 'Other'. Where a person ticked 'Other' they were asked to write in the name of the country. The percentages of 'Cornish nationals' in areas across Cornwall were as follows: Troon & Beacon – 22.4% Redruth – 20.7% St Dennis – 20.1% Illogan – 20% Carn Brea – 19.5% Wendron – 19.5% Camborne – 19.3% Hayle – 18.5% St Day & Lanner – 18.4% Ladock, St Clement & St Erme – 18 Chacewater & Kenwyn – 17.8% Roche – 17.2% St Enoder – 17.2% Newlyn & Mousehole – 17.1% Penzance – 17% Penryn – 17% Bugle – 16.9% Marazion – 16.8% Padstow – 16.5% St Stephen – 16.4% Lanivet – 16.1% St Just & Penwith – 16% St Columb – 15.7% St Agnes – 15.7% St Issey – 15.6% Truro – 15.4% St Blaise – 15.3% Wadebridge – 15.2% Penwithick – 15.2% Probus – 15.1% St Austell – 15% Helston – 14.9% St Teath – 14.7% St Ives – 14.3% Newlyn & Goonhavern – 14% Fowey – 13.9% Lostwithiel – 13.9% Falmouth 13.8% Bodmin – 13.4% Perranporth – 12.9% Tintagel – 12% Camelford – 11.8% Mevagissey – 11.4% Liskeard – 9.5% Bude – 9.5% Newquay – 8.4% Looe – 8.2% Launceston – 7.6% Saltash – 4.9%Check out the statistics in full here.
