A model of the fishing boat on which a Westcountry MP's husband died in a tragic accident has been installed as a permanent memorial at a Cornish church.

Neil Murray, 57, husband of South East Cornwall MP Sheryll Murray, died in March 2011 after becoming entangled in his net as he hauled it in. His boat – Our Boy Andrew named after their son – was found 24 miles off Fowey.

On Sunday, Mrs Murray attended a moving dedication ceremony to her late husband at Cawsand Congregational Church as part of the thanksgiving service for the harvest of the sea.

During the service there was a special prayer of dedication for a model of his trawler which was constructed by Joe Bussell, from Looe. The model is to stay in the church as a permanent memorial.

"It was a very special celebration to my wonderful husband Neil and I would like to thank everyone for attending," Mrs Murray said.

"I would in particular like to thank Joe for enabling such a fitting tribute to be placed in the church of Neil's home village."

Mrs Murray has been a stalwart of campaigns to improve safety in the fishing fleet, urging skippers to take advantage of grants to install better safety equipment.
