Legions of witches, ghosts, ghouls and zombies battled appalling weather conditions last night while stalking the highways and byways of the Westcountry in the spirit of Halloween.

The annual scare-fest saw crowds of youngsters trick-or-treating their way around neighbourhoods, while older revellers partied the night away.

In St Austell thrill-seekers enjoyed a zombie walk around the town. Dozens taking part shuffling through the streets in gory make-up and tattered clothes. And in the town centre a mass Michael Jackson-style Thriller dance routine was held.

In Falmouth, spooky secrets and ghastly tales were revealed at the magnificent Pendennis Castle on a tour around historic battlements.

Over in Devon, for some it was a trip around Kents Cavern, Torquay for a Halloween ghost tour.

Set in the dimly lit caves characters appeared from the dark to make visitors jump.

Haunted hay-rides were the order of the day at The BIG Sheep attraction, near Bideford, north Devon, with wicked witches and scary skeletons.
