Hayle carnivals cancelled due to problems with venue

Two major events on the Hayle social calendar have been cancelled this year after a suitable venue could not be found in time. Both the summer and winter carnivals, which usually take place in Commercial Road car park, have been called off since construction work has blocked off a section of the area. Work on the town's first fire station at the site has left insufficient space for the events to be carried out and organiser Jayne Quick said there was not enough time to find an alternative venue and apply to Cornwall Council for a road closure before August. She added: "We haven't got enough room for everything in half the car park and we are struggling to find another place to go. "It is very difficult. We have had quite a few problems and they can't be sorted that easily. We are very sorry." The events, which see a procession of decorated floats move through the town, are well attended by Hayle residents. Mrs Quick took over the running of the carnivals, which have been a feature in the town for decades, after former chair of the committee Richard 'Dick' Horwell died last year. She said it was a disappointment that they had to be cancelled just a year later. "After Dick died I vowed we would never give it up as long as we didn't have to. But at the end of the day we were backed into a corner, we don't know where to go." Since one carnival pays for another and with hundreds of pounds needed for the road closure alone Mrs Quick said it was regrettable but the Christmas event would also have to be cancelled this year. She vowed that the carnivals would be back next year and said King George V Memorial Walk was being discussed as a possible future location.
