The Government is expected to announce a multi-million pound investment project to improve Cornwall's railway services tomorrow.

Politicians of all parties across Cornwall are hopeful the Prime Minister will announce  a £146 million investment in the Cornish rail infrastructure, which includes a £14 million train care centre at Long Rock, near Penzance.

The train care centre is proposed by the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership, and First Great Western (FGW), and could create more than 50 new jobs.

The rail industry has already announced it will plough £108 million towards the project while Cornwall Council has identified £29.6 million from local funding sources.

Most of the cash would go towards a major improvement of the mainline signalling system in Cornwall.

The new facility at Long Rock would allow existing rolling stock to be upgraded and possibly new carriages built as an alternative to the depot at Old Oak Common in West London, which is to be demolished to make way for an interchange serving the proposed £50 billion High Speed 2 (HS2) line, the Great Western main line and the Crossrail project.

A further £14 million is planned to upgrade the Night Riveria sleeper service.
