Raking up fantastic art on Newquay's beaches

MORE than 150 people grabbed rakes to create the largest work of art ever seen in Newquay on Saturday – a sand drawing spanning three beaches.

The stunt was part of the Big Draw, a national event aimed at promoting creativity in unusual places, and took place on Towan, Great Western and Tolcarne beaches.

It is backed by renowned artists and cartoonists such as David Hockney, Gerald Scarfe and Quentin Blake.

The Newquay event was the brainchild of new gallery, greyblackwhite, on Fore Street, and organisers hope it could win a prize when entries are judged by a panel in London.

The Big Beach Draw was led by local artist Tony Plant, who has been busy creating tidal drawings on the resort's beaches over recent weeks.

The theme this year was "2012 In Lines", and Sara Black, from greyblackwhite, decided Tony's rake drawings would link in perfectly.

She said they were delighted that so many people had turned out for the family event, braving cold winds and even the odd hail shower. Artists' ages ranged from just 12 months to 70.

Tony said: "I was totally inspired by the incredible ideas and enthusiasm of everyone taking part.

"It was really fantastic to witness the energy and excitement that so many people brought to the beaches."

Sara added: "People came from across Newquay, and a large number of visitors and holidaymakers, joined in.

"I've got lots of ideas for more community-centred events and I'd love to hear from people.

"If you were on the beach, watching from the cliff-top, or took part, please share your photos and comments on our Facebook page or send them to me and I'll share them with everyone.

"On Saturday, (tomorrow) we'll be asking everyone to vote on their favourite drawing and the winner will receive a prize."

As well as the art, Karl Fice-Thomson, from Newquay Activity Centre, led a free beach safari.
