A section of Fistral Beach in Newquay was cordoned off yesterday morning after a member of the public discovered a military flare.
Police were called to the scene at 7.10am after the flare was found between sand dunes in the middle of the beach.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the unexploded flare was used by military helicopters.
It is not clear how the flare ended up on the beach, however police said it could have been washed up.
They contacted the Royal Military Police who came and collected the flare at around 9.30am.
Witnesses saw officers load the flare onto a stretcher before putting it in a black car.
No one was injured in the incident.
