POLICE are confiscating alcohol from revellers pouring into Falmouth for a night out.

As part of a campaign to reduce alcohol-related violent crime and antisocial behaviour, drink was taken from more than 50 people stopped as they arrived by bus, taxi or foot between Thursday and Saturday.

The town centre is part of the alcohol-free zone and anyone caught with drink by officers will have it taken away.

Sergeant Gary Watts said: "Police, bus and taxi companies and local licensees are pushing to make Falmouth an even safer destination for all at night."

Those stopped were mainly young adults and some claimed they were from out of the area.

"All sorts of alcohol was seized – bottles, glasses and cans and the alcohol was disposed of at the time," added Sergeant Watts.

"These measures are in place to tackle the issues that can make the town feel unsafe.

"People drinking in the street not only gives a bad impression, but the glass that gets left can cause injury or get used as a weapon."

Measures already introduced this year include the use of body-worn video and taxi marshals, which is said to have helped reduce violent crime by 13 per cent on last year.

"Along with the licensees, we are now focusing on other issues that can have a detrimental effect on the feel and safety of the town, such as excessive drunkenness and drinking in the street," said Sergeant Watts.

The campaign will continue through November and December.

As well as the alcohol seizures, four people were banned from the town for 48 hours and others were refused entry or ordered to leave pubs and clubs for being too drunk.

"Those that are rowdy or excessively drunk also add to the unsafe feeling of the town, but often end up becoming offenders or victims later in the night," said Sergeant Watts.

"By refusing entry or getting them to leave town, the town will be a safer place and violence will be reduced further. Activity of the next few weeks will see if the message is getting through."
