DRIVERS on one of Falmouth's busiest roads where speeding is rife now have a permanent visual reminder to slow down.

The police said lives may be saved as a result of the installations of a speed visor, which flashes 30mph if anyone is exceeding the limit.

It has been funded out of mayor Geoffrey Evans's highway budget as it has been a long held ambition to get the device at the site.

He said: "I feel that Melville Road is one of the main roads in Falmouth that needs one of these signs.

"In the past there has been a temporary sign in place, but this is now permanent to warn people."

PC Andy Hocking said: "The prevention of fatal and serious injury road traffic collisions is a force priority.

"Excessive speeds in built-up areas, particularly residential, is of concern as it is a major contributory fact in many collisions.

"Preventative measures such as this speed display is a great use of Mr Evan's money as lives may be saved as a direct result." He said speeding on the road was common and previous checks found that the average was above the limit. Enforcement through fines and education through speedwatch will continue in the area.
