ANYONE with their old Christmas tree still hanging around can have it taken away for free by the council.

They will either be picked up this week or next week, said a Cornwall Council spokeswoman.

"We will collect real Christmas trees in the weeks starting January 12 and January 19," she said.

"Put your tree out on your normal rubbish collection day on the alternate week to your recycling collection.

"The trees will be collected for free and then shredded and composted."

Trees can also be taken to any household waste and recycling centres.

Christmas cards can also recycled as card, of course.

White envelopes can go into the paper sack, but coloured or brown envelopes should go with the cardboard.

Wrapping paper, as long as its not foil or plastic, can go in with paper but people are asked to remove any sticky tape, string or ribbons.

Metal chocolate and biscuit tins along with scrunched up tin foil can go in the bag with plastic bottles and cans. Plastic sweet tubs will have to go to landfill.
