A fresh bout of wet and windy weather is set to sweep across the Westcountry today bringing more misery to residents who have spent the week battling the elements.

The Met Office has issued yellow and amber warnings for Cornwall and Devon respectively saying up to 40mm of rain could fall during the course of the day.

The rain will be accompanied by strong, gusting winds, particularly tonight when speeds could reach up to 70mph in exposed areas.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: "It is pretty dreadful weather and certainly time to batten down the hatches," he said.

"There is more heavy rain on Saturday, rain from the word go and it will stay in Devon and Cornwall for the entire day."

Last night, the Environment Agency issued 27 flood warning for the South West and 49 flood alerts.

The Met Office spokesman said the winds will pick up as night falls with gusts of 50-60mph, although this could reach speeds of 70mph.

A brief respite is on the cards for tomorrow which the spokesman said was looking "brighter" although still gusty.

Next week will see a pattern of generally unsettled weather, he added.
