A GIANT tree that was ripped out from Hayle harbourside during yesterday's storm will be replaced with artwork made from the fallen evergreen.
Local shopkeepers and motorists were left shocked when it crashed down at Penpol Terrace at about 2pm.
Flowertime shop owner Mark Nicholas said: "We heard a noise and looked outside to see the tree had come down.
"It just missed a car going past and one of the branches landed in the road.
"It has been there for years so it is a shame."
Shortly afterwards all police, Highways staff and Hayle town councillors rushed to the scene to close the road and clear the area.
Hayle town councillor Richard Horwell, who helped to dismantle the town's entangled Christmas lights off the tree, said: "That area used to be an old railway bank. They just put some earth and grass on top of it so the roots were never able to grow deep into the ground but spread out sideways.
"A local artist is going to make a wooden statue out of the wood and put it in its place."
