The Newquay community came together in August to welcome the cultural olympiad project Nowhereisland when it arrived in Newquay.  A large community flotilla greeted the floating island at Towan Head and led it into the bay.

The flotilla was organised by Sara Black of Newquay's greyblackwhite gallery, and had a great turn-out including:- Perranporth & Newquay Surf Life Saving Club with Spike Gaisford and Sue Butler and all their nippers on Towan Beach, Perranporth surf-boats commandeered by Pete Gaisford, a huge group of nippers, juniors and masters from Newquay, Crantock, Lusty Glaze, Watergate Bay, Portreath and Gyllynvase surf life saving clubs on paddle boards, a large team of Stand Up Paddleboards led by Newquay's Dom Moore, our 200 year-old gig The Newquay from Newquay Rowing Club, private charter boats and fishing boats from the harbour including Mystique, Loyal Partner, Che-Sara-Sara, Kernow Belle, Galcadora, Baloo and support from both lifeboats and the RNLI.

Water safety cover was provided by Newquay lifeguards Nick Pendreich and Jack Butler with First Response GB and Barclays Bank in Newquay supported the event with match funding.
Money raised from the event enabled the Joe Way appeal to donate £500 to the Fishermans Mission and £460 to the Soul Food Kitchen. Beth Mitchell said 'we are so grateful for this generous donation, it will make a huge difference to the Soul Food Kitchen helping to support local people who find themselves in housing need this winter.

This money will help us to extend our programme to help more local people'. Soul Food Kitchen is every Thursday 5-7pm at St Columb Minor Church hall. The Fisherman's Mission is the only fishermen's charity that provides emergency support alongside practical and emotional care for fishermen and their families.
