Godolphin end St Austell's 14 match winning run

Godolphin Atlantic 2, St Austell 0

Seven days before the biggest game in the club's history, St Austell's 14-match winning run in the premier division was brought to an end at Godolphin Way on Saturday.

Goals from Phil Lowry and Aaron Dilley clinched a deserved victory for the G-Men, who extended their unbeaten run in the league to 11 games - their last defeat coming at St Blazey in October.

The last time St Austell dropped any points in the league was back on August 26 when they were beaten 1-0 at Ivybridge.

But they could have no complaints about Saturday's result as Phil Lafferty's men, without the rested Liam Eddy (who had a minor knee problem) were well below their best ahead of next weekend's FA Vase quarter-final against Ascot United.

Despite the importance of next week's tie, St Austell showed no lack of commitment in the first half, and neither did Godolphin as referee Lee Roberts struggled to restore calm.

Godolphin finally made the breakthrough with five minutes of the half remaining when Lowry drove the ball into the top corner from 20 yards out giving Jason Chapman no chance.

And with the half in the second minute of injury time the St Austell goalkeeper was beaten again by Dilley's brilliant finish from the edge of the area.

Substitute Lee Paxton was unlucky not to add a third in the 69th minute when his audacious effort struck the foot of the post.

The nearest St Austell came to pulling a goal back was when Dan Nancarrow saw his effort come off the upright.

But it was Godolphin who deservedly claimed victory and Lafferty will want to see a big improvement from his players in next week's big game.
