Community launderette opens for business in Camelford

THE county's first community launderette has been launched.

The Camelford Community Launderette was officially opened on Friday by the Lord Bishop of Truro, the RtRevd Tim Thornton and the Revd Steve Wild, chairman of Cornwall Methodist District.

The launch of the service came with a bit of bump for one of those behind the scheme after a stand fell and hit Revd Wild on the head at the moment the ceremonial ribbon was cut.

"It caused a great hilarity," said a spokesperson for the new scheme.

"Business carried on as usual as the event took place with mums and kids using the machines and then joining in the celebration."

A launderette for the town came about after there was found to be a local need for the drop in cleaning service, which is on Camelford high street near the Methodist Chapel.

"As the Local Action Group is nearing the end of its funding programme, it is keen to leave a long term legacy," saidLinda Emmett, East Cornwall Local Action Group manager.

"We are happy to support a project such as the community-run launderette which meets our aim to provide new services and facilities in rural communities, especially innovative projects such as this. We hope everyone in Camelford gets behind the venture, making use of the facility to help the launderette achieve long term sustainability."

As part of the launch, local children from Camelford Community Primary School performed songs and Brenda Oliver, founding member of Camelford Community Launderette, told the story of the service as she addressed the assembled guests which included a Nigerian Methodist Bishop visiting Cornwall to see examples of church work in the UK.

"A real sense of community spirit was about the place," said the launderette spokesperson.

"To finish off, the children were given bubbles to play with, in keeping with the launderette theme of suds and soap, there were bubbles flying all over the place."

THE county's first community launderette has been launched.

The Camelford Community Launderette was officially opened on Friday by the Lord Bishop of Truro, the RtRevd Tim Thornton and the Revd Steve Wild, chairman of Cornwall Methodist District.

It was established after a local vicar realised there was a real need for the service in the area where some people do not have enough money to buy their own washing machine.

A launderette, which is on Camelford high street near the Methodist Chapel, also aims to be a place for people to meet.

Much of the funding to get the project off the ground has come from the East Cornwall Local Action Group with support from The Rosemullion Trust, Cornwall Community Foundation's C100 Club and Lord and Lady St Levan Fund and The Diocese of Truro. Local councillor Keith Goodenough also made a contribution from his Community Chest.

"As the Local Action Group is nearing the end of its funding programme, it is keen to leave a long term legacy," saidLinda Emmett, East Cornwall Local Action Group manager.

Video and pictures: Controversy at start of World Pilot Gig Championships as nine crews are disqualified

By Lyn Barton on the Isles of Scilly

Controversy marred the opening stages of the World Pilot Gig Championships on the Isles of Scilly when nine crews were given their marching orders for flouting rules.
In the iconic long line up today, which this year featured over 130 gigs, the crew from Appledore rowing in Verbena were disqualified for bad seamanship. The previous evening as the veterans events opened the competition six crews were kicked out of the ladies competition after pushing over the starting line. Then, in the men's veterans event, two more crews suffered a similar fate for an over enthusiastic start.

Rick Persich, championship committee chairman, conceded he had come in for some flack. But he said that the rules had to be enforced in the interests of fairness.
"Sometimes there are strong words and I can understand why," he said.
"I know it's hard on crews who come a long way and spend a lot of money to take part, but the rules are there for everyone and are explained fully.
"In the case of Verbena, the boat turned 90 degrees to the starting line and impeded the passage of several gigs.
"We had about six other crews complain and it was seen by the starting marshals."
The long, 1.6 nautical mile race from St Agnes to St Mary's establishes the seeding position for the remaining heats and final over the shorter distance from Nut Rock near Tresco.
Indomitable Falmouth ladies won the first race, with Fowey River and Caradon in second and third respectively.
In the men's long race Looe eased across the finish line first by several lengths, followed by defending champions Falmouth and Roseland.

Gloucestershire 19 Cornwall 24

Cornwall made the perfect start to their Bill Beaumont Cup campaign as they beat 33-times finalists Gloucestershire at Cinderford, reports Dick Straughan from Dockham Road

It was the first win for the Black & Gold on Gloucestershire soil for eight years and they thoroughly deserved their success producing a committed team performance and dominant second half display.

Gloucestershire, with nine Cinderford players in their starting line up, took the lead after just three minutes as skipper Will Warden broke through some non-existent tackling to score under the posts. Wilcox converted but Cornwall roared back with Sam Matavesi`s converted try immediately levelling the tie.

The home side had much the better of the first half and finally extended their lead after 25 minutes with a fine solo try from wing Lloyd Stapleton, but Cornwall dug in defensively and Thirlby`s penalty kept them in the hunt trailing 12-10 at half time.

Two minutes into the second half Redruth prop Craig Williams smashed his way over the line for a second Cornwall try and Thirlby added the extras.

Cornwall then had to shrug off the combined effects of a mis-firing lineout, a yellow card for skipper Ben Hilton and a third Gloucestershire try as centre Barney Pascall scored from close range. But when Nev Codlin was sin-binned for killing the ball close to his own line Cornwall were handed a chance and they took it.

From a series of five metre penalties and attacking scrums they relentlessly punished Gloucestershire with Number 8 Sam Hocking finally racing off down the blind side to score his team`s third try. Thirlby converted and Cornwall remained strong throughout a prolonged period of injury time to secure their win.

Cornwall's next game is away to Kent, who lost 50-26 at home to Championship holders Hertfordshire today, on Saturday

West Cornwall's first basking shark of the year spotted at Porthcurno

THE first basking shark of the year has been spotted in west Cornwall waters.
Arriving a little later than usual the gentle giant was seen swimming off Porthcurno last week.
Believed to be a young shark, stretching just two metres compared to up to 12 metres for a fully grown animal, it was a welcome sight for spotters.
"It is very exciting, every year I can't wait to see them," said Rory Goodall, from Elemental Tours in Penzance, who collates information on shark sightings.
"You see the same animals year after year and can tell them apart because each one has distinguishing marks."
Mr Goodall said that thanks to the chilly winter it had taken a little longer than normal to see the tell tale fins appear in our waters. The first basking shark was seen in Cornwall on March 8 last year.
"The sea temperature has been down which has stopped the growth of plankton, the food they eat," he said.
All basking shark sightings are added to a data base and handed over to the Shark Trust and Cornwall Wildlife Trust.
"It is all to do with conservation," he said.
"Globally basking sharks are threatened so we like to make a note of each one we have seen so we know what they are doing, how many there are and things like that."
In recent years a code of conduct has been brought in by the Shark Trust to help protect the docile animals from disturbance and harassment by water users.
"The waters around Cornwall play host to a phenomenal diversity of sharks, skates and rays, most of these species can't be seen from above the water but the basking shark is a fine example of the species that we do get the privilege of sighting," said Ali Hood, director of conservation at the Shark Trust.
"Understanding the movement of basking sharks throughout the summer months helps give a greater awareness of the productivity and health of our marine environment. Noting the size and activity of sharks increases this knowledge and photographs of the dorsal fin adds greatly to our information base."
If you spot a basking shark the best advice is not to disturb it but view it from a safe distance.
For more information and to log a sighting, visit www.baskingsharks.org and if you have any pictures of basking sharks in the waters of west Cornwall email them to cwoodhouse@c-dm.co.uk.

UPDATE at 10.36am: THE RNLI is due to hold a press conference regarding the tragedy at the lifeboat station in Rock at noon today.

AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD girl and her father, aged 51, have died as the result of a Padstow speed boat tragedy yesterday -four other people have been left seriously injured. A major rescue operation was launched in the Camel Estuary, Padstow, after six family members were thrown from an out of control speed boat at about 3.50pm. His 39-year-old wife and other three children - a four-year-old boy, and two girls aged 10 and 12 - were airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth and are being treated for a range of injuries. Two of them have life-changing injuries to their arms and legs. The six people are believed to have been on holiday from the London area. Charlie Toogood, a heroic 32-year-old man from the Rock area and member of Camel Ski Club, is being praised for leaping from his boat to the speedboat yesterday, while it was still circling in the water with no one aboard. "He managed to get aboard the vessel and get it under control, preventing it from causing any further injury or claiming any more lives," said Matt Pavitt from HM Coastguard. Police are investigating the cause of the incident and the boat, believed to be privately owned, is being examined. "It looks like the speed boat was out of control for a short time and it is believed some people may have been run over," said Jo Rawlings, spokesperson for the coastguard service, which is coordinating the rescue operation. A South Western Ambulance Service spokesperson said the speedboat threw its passengers into the water and careered into them at "terrifying" speed. Local resident Martin Jenkins, 63, said: "I heard the helicopter and went over to the estuary and saw the ambulance crews working on a couple of people. "It was all very frantic and the people were lying on the floor in a lot of discomfort. "They were airlifted away I think because they were put on some stretchers. "The emergency services acted pretty quickly and everyone was ushered away so we couldn't see anymore, it was probably for our own good because it looked a mess, it was pretty nasty. "I'm not sure if they were locals because I don't think it was their speedboat, but whoever they are I hope they're alright." The coastguard rescue teams from St Merryn and Polzeath were called to the scene, along with search and rescue helicopters from RNAS Culdrose and RMB Chivenor. The Rock inshore lifeboat and Padstow all weather lifeboats were also helping with the recovery efforts. A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman said officers were called to the scene in the Camel Estuary, near Padstow. He said: "It's still an ongoing incident and we are working alongside the coastguard and ambulance service." Jo Rawlings for the coastguard added: "We do not believe at this time any other vessels, kayaks or people were involved in this incident, other than those that had fallen from the speedboat." The two people who lost their lives have not yet been formally identified but their next of kin has been informed.

Falmouth sailor Goodchild set for Solitaire warm up race

Falmouth offshore sailor, Sam Goodchild is hoping for another strong result in this week's 48 hour race ahead of the main event of his season, the month-long Solitaire du Figaro in June. This afternoon the 23-year-old, on his 33ft boat, Shelterbox will be lining up alongside 29 other sailors for the Solo Concarneau race in France. he said: "It's a 340 mile, non-stop race along the Brittany coast and is a good final dress rehearsal for next month's Solitaire. "It's a tricky course, especially tidal-wise. We go around Finistere, where the tides can be significant. You've got to judge them right or you could lose many places in a race as close as this. "The good thing is we will be racing in this very same area in Leg 3 of the Solitaire, so experience is invaluable in these potentially crucial parts of the course." In his last race, the Solo Arrimer Sam finished in a very encouraging 11th place, the top placed British sailor. He has spent the three weeks since that race prepping his boat and training with many of the best solo sailors in France. Goodchild added: "I'm feeling pretty relaxed ahead of this race and my boat's in good shape. I'll be happy If I can come out of it like the last one, with a reasonable result and having had a good race in the fleet. "I hope I can build a bit of confidence at this time in the season and know I'm not too far off the pace of the leading boats. The weather was one of the hardest parts of Sam's last race - strong winds and big seas made for difficult racing conditions. The forecast is much better for this race, one of the main challenges this time is managing his sleep. he said: "This race is likely to take a bit longer than the Solo Arrimer, around 50 hours. "So you definitely need some sleep but not a lot. Too much, or not enough sleep and you could lose vital places." After this race has finished Sam will have just over three weeks to prepare for the Solitaire du Figaro, starting in Bordeaux on June 2. This will be Sam's first Solitaire as a graduate of the Artemis Offshore Academy. The AOA is a Cowes-based training programme to support young British sailing talent. Goodchild will be joined in Bordeaux by fellow Artemis graduates, Nick Cherry and Henry Bomby plus at least one current Academy sailor.

GIG rowers from Falmouth rowed themselves into the record books at the weekend with victories in the men's and women's races. The 24th World Pilot Gig Championships welcomed more than 130 boats to compete on the Isles of Scilly. At the conclusion of a final, which they never looked in doubt of winning, the ladies team, who had led from the front throughout, romped to victory. In a more fiercely contested climax to the championship, the men's team from the Cornish club also sealed their place on the podium, beating Looe into second and Roseland into third place. Falmouth men's captain Jamie Maxted said: "It is just great, as good as the first time. We have been training so hard all winter that to win again is just an amazing feeling." Russell Lawrence, who trained the crew, said they had worked their socks off. He said: "I'm absolutely delighted. It's 20 weeks' hard work which started in October and there's been no let up. But at the end of the day it's down to whether they can perform in those vital ten minutes and they did." In the ladies final, Falmouth fielded the same team as last year, beating Mounts Bay and Caradon into second and third place. For Karen Beswetherick, winning the 2013 world championship title was particularly sweet as it marked her tenth medal. "This was a special one and one I really wanted," she said. THOUSANDS of people have signed a petition calling for Collin Brewer to resign his newly won place on Cornwall Council. The controversial politician resigned in February after it was revealed he said disabled children should be put down because they cost the authority too much. But news that he had narrowly secured re-election to represent Wadebridge East at County Hall has seen many people using social networking to vent their anger. An e-petition has already attracted nearly 1,140 names and a number of Facebook pages calling on Mr Brewer to resign or be sacked have attracted more than 2,500 people. "I set this Facebook group up after he was re-elected and was very upset that after his comments he wanted to stand again and thought the Cornish people would forget what he had said and let him get away with it," wrote James Ball who set up one of the Facebook pages. "He can't be that arrogant and think we are all going to sit back and let him carry on. "This man should not be in power of any kind and if we get him to resign again it will show that we will not stand for this kind of behaviour." Mr Ball from Troon near Camborne, who has to use a wheelchair after damaging his hips and knees through years of playing rugby and working in the building trade, said he was shocked that Mr Brewer was voted in again. "Just because you have a disability does not mean you are a drain, you can do just as much you just find a different way of doing it," he said. A demonstration was set to take place at County Hall on Wednesday May 8 for people angry that Mr Brewer had been re-elected.

Television gold Barbara Windsor was jokingly told 'Get outta my restaurant!' while dining at a hotel near St Austell. The bubbly Cockney and former EastEnders star stayed for two-nights at the Boscundle Manor, Tregrehan, during her visit last week. Barbara, who played pub landlady Peggy Mitchell in the BBC soap, favourite catchphrase 'Get outta my pub' was turned on its head by hotelier David Parker. He said: "She laughed and she replied 'Yeah get outta my pub!'. Everybody she meets must say that to her but she was very gracious in accepting what I thought was funny. "She is a little pocket rocket", added Mr Parker, who runs Boscundle Manor with his wife Sharon. Mrs Parker added: "She was an absolutely stunning person, down to earth and so friendly." Barbara dined with husband Scott, who was also "gorgeous", according to Mrs Parker, and the actress who became a household name for her roles in the cheeky Carry On comedies spent time talking and posing for pictures with hotel staff. Barbara was visiting Cornwall last week to promote The Big Lunch at the Eden Project, an initiative from the environmental charity encouraging communities to spend time with each other over a lunch at least once a year. This year's fifth Big Lunch will be on Saturday, June 2.
