Face of a man hanged at Bodmin Jail in the 19th Century is reconstructed

A full-sized head of a man hanged at Bodmin Jail which is believed to be that of one of two brothers convicted of a notorious 19th century murder has been reconstructed. Artist Stuart Beilby made the impression which he said was taken from a photo of the death mask of William Lightfoot, who, with brother James was hanged at the jail for they were convicted of murdering Wadebridge merchant Nevell Norway in 1840. Mr Beilby said it was common practice at Bodmin Jail in the mid-19th century for casts to be made of hanged men. In some cases, casts were made to study the characteristics of the criminals' personalities using physiognomy (shape and size of the head) and phrenology (study of the site of different abilities on the head). This was thought to be useful in predicting criminal behaviour. Mr Beilby said: " Apparently there is a chap in Wadebridge who has six of these casts, but I have yet to track him down. "My reconstruction was taken from a photo of one of them, and from drawings of the Lightfoot brothers at the time, I am 95 per cent sure this is William Lightfoot. "Every prison who arrived at Bodmin Jail at that time would have his head shaved to get rid of lice, which is why all the death masks show no hair.'' Mr Beilby, who produces mannequins for exhibitions at Bodmin Jail with colleague Mark Rablin, made the cast from clay. He said he hoped to make another head cast of William Bartlett, hanged in 1883 for the murder of a child in Lanivery.

Cornwall one win away from MCCA Trophy quarter-finals

Cornwall's cricketers left East Challow last night with a spring in their step, after winning their MCCA Trophy game against Oxfordshire by 16 runs.

They move on to Cople today to take on Bedfordshire, with qualification hopes very much in their own hands.

Hertfordshire beat Bedfordshire yesterday to complete their programme and qualify. A win today and Cornwall will join them on six points, assuring a quarter-final berth.

If Cornwall lose, then Oxfordshire and Devon, if they beat Bedfordshire at Dunstable next week, will come into the equation with net run rate the decisive factor.

Cornwall went into the weekend with an inferior rate to the others. Oxfordshire needed 227 yesterday and they looked on track when opener Damien Shirazi made 85. Crucially he was dismissed by Matt Robins at 148-4 with ten overs remaining.

The target got reduced to 40 off five overs with six wickets still intact.

Something special was needed by the Cornish bowlers and Sam Hockin and Tom Sharp provided it.

They ran through the lower order as the hosts lost their last six wickets for just 21 runs.

Sharp took five for 29, only the fifth Cornish bowler to take five wickets in the competition. Hockin, who had earlier got rid of opener Richard Kaufman for 11, took three for 30 from ten overs.

Cornwall, who had been put in, got off to an uncertain start losing Robins, Dan Davis and Taylor Williams with only 58 on the board.

Neil Curnow hit a six and eight fours in his 41 but when he and Jake Libby (45) both went at 122-5 Cornwall had plenty to do.

Just as he did at Redruth last week, Chris Hunkin came to the rescue. He was out just before the 226-8 close having hit 53.

Rob Harrison (28no) added some late impetus as the pair added a record eighth wicket stand of 56 for Cornwall in the competition.

How valuable a contribution it was to prove.

THE Cornish coastal havens of Padstow and St Mawes are among the five most expensive seaside places to buy a house in the UK. The average house in St Mawes will now set you back £369,224 according to the latest information from the Halifax, up 115% in the past decade. While a house in Padstow is even more expensive, with an average of £386,261 – up 93% since 1993. Prize for the most expensive town goes to Salcombe, in Devon, where the average gaff goes for a monster £570, 378, just slightly ahead of Sandbanks in Dorset. Sandbanks was for a long time the priciest british seaside town, but prices there have gone up by 46% in the past decade – a slower rate of increase than the other top spots. Second-home owners have helped push up property prices in prettier coastal areas. Martin Ellis, from the Halifax, said seaside towns offer "high quality of life and a healthy environment" "As a result, living by the coast can come at a price," he said.

THE Mennaye Field will this Sunday host the culmination of Cornish Pirates prop Alan Paver`s testimonial season as his Invitational XV take on a Cornwall County Championship XV (2.30pm). Rotherham-born Paver joined the Pirates in 2002 from Plymouth Albion and has to date made 300 appearances for the club. Whilst exact details of the opponents for the day are being finalised this week Paver`s team includes some notable former Pirates favourites including former skipper Tim Cowley, ex-Wasps prop Nick Adams, Tongan hooker Vili Ma`asi, and lock Ian Nimmo who left the club for Newport Gwent Dragons a year ago. PEOPLE in Camborne have paid their respects to a soldier murdered outside Woolwich Barracks last week. Drummer Lee Rigby, aged 25, was killed on Wednesday afternoon by two alleged terror suspects. Following the incidents a handful of flowers and a T-shirt carrying the words "RIP Lee Rigby" have been laid outside Camborne parish church. Revd Mike Firbank said: "The initial T-shirt was placed there by an anonymous member of the public. "The flowers were added the day after and this weekend someone added the Union Jack. "On Sunday we lit a candle for Rigger and said prayers for his family and colleagues. "I don't know who placed the tributes on the railings; however as the local chaplain for the British Legion I believe that they are a lovely thought and highly commendable."

FRIENDS and family of a 26-year-old mother with terminal cancer raised about £9,000 yesterday to send her and her young family on a holiday of a lifetime. They organised a big fundraising event at the Coppice Inn in Lanner to help Ashton Forder of Redruth. Mrs Forder was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 2009 but she has recently found out that the cancer has spread to her diaphragm and is now inoperable. She will start a few months of chemotherapy next week before she, her husband and their three children will make the break of a lifetime to Disneyland in Paris. The event was organised by friends Gemma Delaney, Ruth Stevens, Zoey Bryant and Lisa Williams. Gemma said: "What an amazing day it was, there was so much support and we had around 300 people in and out during the day and around 200 in the evening. "We managed to raise a total of £9,000 so they will be able to have the break of a lifetime and make precious memories with the children. "In addition Close Hill Co-op store in Redruth raised £3,000 for Ashton towards the holiday so we owe them a massive thanks." Gemma and the other organisers would also like to extend their thanks to everyone who donated equipment, food, raffle and auction prizes, adding: "We were overwhelmed with the response we've had."

Cornish Sharks struggle against all odds against strong Bristol team

FOLLOWING their win against Farnham Knights a fortnight ago, and the elation at the winning form of their youth Team Cornwall on Saturday, the Cornish Sharks had hoped to come away with a positive result from Bristol – a team they had beaten decisively twice last season. However, with a reduced travelling squad of only 24 players, and seven of those rookies, the odds were not looking good when the coin was tossed and Cornwall were looking at Bristol's side-line with more than 70 players. The first and second quarters were relatively uneventful and the scoreline demonstrated that. Cornish Sharks and Apache both moved the ball when in their possession and defences remained tight keeping the score to 0-0 just before half-time. Sharks were in possession about two minutes before half-time and they drove the ball some 60 yards with some great passing and running, especially from Ronan O'Neill and Matt Cann and Kieran Salais at quarter-back. The ball was at the 25-yard line and on fourth down it was decided by coach Brian Smallworth to get the field goal unit on. Dave Kriehn kicked the ball 35 yards giving the Sharks the first score of the game and the half-time score at 3-0 to the Sharks. The third quarter started and somehow the mood had changed. Bristol rotated players as they had every two plays on defense and their benefit of numbers was starting to show. It was a very hot day and with little relief for the Cornish players, they started to run out of steam. Bristol scored their first touchdown with a reverse in only a matter of minutes into the third quarter and it was the start of a defensive onslaught against a tired Cornish offense with blitz after blitz on the offense forcing mistakes which cost 24 points – two interceptions for touchdowns with two extra points on each, a safety and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. The rookies were unsettled until the fourth quarter when they stemmed the onslaught and changed the blocking schemes allowing only one further Bristol touchdown.

Posh Pasties bring the upper crust to Fowey

The launch of a new business venture brought crowds of hungry people to the streets of Fowey on Bank Holiday Monday keen to get their teeth into a Posh Pasty. The new gourmet take on the Cornish classic is the brainchild of TV presenter, James Strawbridge and his wife Holly. The family business that aims to provide delicious gourmet pasties made from the best locally sourced ingredients was very well received during its official launch in Fowey. Lazy Jack's Kitchen, who will be the first official outlet for the pasties, had people queuing out on to the street waiting to get a taste of the new pasty on the block. Michael Redmond, owner of Lazy jack's, said: "We were so busy that we sold out very quickly. "The launch day went off brilliantly, even the weather held out, and we found it difficult to keep up with the demand. "The pasties a little more expensive than your average pasties, but then they are not your average pasties and we think they are definitely worth the extra!" During a busy few hours, James Strawbridge and Richard Kittow of Kittows of Fowey Butchers gave a pasty making demonstration, free pasties were presented to Fowey Gig Club to mark their impressive performance at the recent World Championships and the rowers then went head to head in a men versus women pasty crimping contest. The result being a fairly convincing victory for the ladies. James Strawbridge said via Twitter that pasty fever had gripped Fowey, adding: "Thank you to everyone who wished us well today, and to all who turned up in person to show their support."

Crime at final Run to the Sun Festival in Newquay half that of last year, police say

CRIME during the final Run to the Sun (RTTS) festival weekend in Newquay almost halved year on year, police have revealed. There were 34 offences recorded between Friday and Monday, compared to 64 for the same period last year, and 14 people were arrested. The resort's police force was supported by extra officers, as well as dog handlers and the ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) team, who were stopping motorists. Special Constables from as far as Exeter put in a total of 187 hours over the weekend, while British Transport Police helped kick off this year's Operation Brunel, "meeting and greeting" revellers arriving by train. Alcohol was confiscated at the railway station and one person was arrested after being found in possession of an offensive weapon. Inspector Dave Meredith paid tribute to the work of his officers, and to the Newquay Safe partnership, which has been pushing to make the town safer since two teenagers died in drunken cliff falls in 2009. He said: "I am pleased to say that the majority of visitors to Newquay for RTTS were very well behaved. The reduction in recorded crime of 46 per cent compared to the previous year speaks volumes. I was pleased to see both Street Safe and Street Pastors operating over the weekend, providing care and support to vulnerable persons. "There were numerous incidents of minor disorder in the town centre, however due to the strong visible police presence, the majority of these incidents were quickly brought under control before any crime was committed. "We have received considerable feedback from the public, commenting on how well they thought the event was policed, and how the town has changed to being far more family orientated over the last few years. Considerable credit must be given to the Newquay Safe partnership for this positive change to the town's reputation." He also thanked Mike Finnegan, operations director at Trevelgue Holiday Park, which hosts RTTS, for his close co-operation with police over the last 17 years. RTTS has been running for 27 years. Mr Meredith said: "Although RTTS has presented some considerable challenges to policing over the years it has run, it has traditionally been seen as the start point of the towns summer, and has generated considerable revenue for the towns businesses over the years. Mike has always worked closely with Newquay police and has provided great support to our events planning and operational policing over the years." Geoff Brown, Cornwall councillor for Newquay central, added: "The success of this year's event and the huge reduction in crime is a great tribute to the combined efforts of the whole Newquay Safe partnership and especially the highly visible and effective presence of the police, under the leadership of Dave Meredith. It is very reassuring to the public in general that we have such a dedicated team looking after our town."

CORNISH All Blacks' top points scorer Kieron Lewitt picked up two big honours at the club's end-of-season awards evening at Polson Bridge. The talented full-back, who is also backs coach at the club, was named as the club's Player of the Year and the Supporters' Player of the Year. He finished the National Two South campaign with 262 points. The Players' Player of the Year award went to versatile back Nielson Webber, who has been named for the first time in the England Counties squad, which has a two-match tour of Belgium next month. He joined the club from National Three South West side Barnstaple last summer, and can play at scrum half, fly half or in either centre position. Former Okehampton scrum half Richard Friend, who rejoined the All Blacks last June after a spell on loan at Barnstaple, was chosen as the Coaches' Player of the Year. The Most Improved Player award went to centre Liam Yeo, who also picked up the Young Back of the Year honour, while hooker Fred Bulut and back rower Lloyd Duke were joint winners of the Young Forward of the Year prize. Club Person of the Year went to director Dave Baker; and the Player On And Off The Field award went to club captain and assistant coach Tom Rawlings. The Endeavour Award (For Achievement Throughout The Season) was presented to head coach Cliff 'Spike' Rainford, who did very well to steer the club to seventh place in the National Two South table, in his first season in the hot seat and with a substantially reduced playing budget. Webber will be joined on the England Counties tour by his All Blacks team-mate, Cornwall skipper and lock Ben Hilton, and Duchy and Redruth prop Darren Jacques, who have both played for the Counties before. The tour will run from June 8-17 and will include matches against a Belgium President's XV on Wednesday, June 12, and a Belgium XV on Sunday, June 16. The tour party will also carry out coaching sessions and outreach visits while in the country. Another former All Blacks favourite, back rower Sam Hocking, had to turn down a place as the tour clashes with pre-season training for his new club Ealing Trailfinders as they prepare for their first campaign in the Championship after winning the National League One title.
