Children's hospice nurse speaks of ""unbelievable dignity and bravery" of children and parents in bid for business funding

A nurse at an organisation that looks after children with fatal illnesses has spoken of the "unbelievable dignity and bravery" of the people she helps. Children's Hospice South West nurse Carly Hamilton is at the centre of a new campaign to get business sponsorship to help provide staff. CHSW has launched a new corporate initiative calling for 30 businesses to contribute £1,000 each to cover the cost of one qualified children's nurse for one year. CHSW said the initiative was putting the unsung work of the care team at the hospices into the spotlight. Mrs Hamilton, paediatric nurse at CHSW's Little Harbour centre said: "The best part of my job is being able to make the children's stay with us magical – to help families make special memories is a huge part of my role. "The hardest part of my job is giving end of life and bereavement care to the children and families. It's impossible to not be affected by looking after a child who is dying." Little Harbour offers individual children's bedrooms, accommodation for parents and siblings and a wide range of play and therapy facilities. Mrs Hamilton said: "There are times when I am quite simply lost for words. I have seen unbelievable dignity and bravery from both the children and the families and it is something I will never forget." Bernadette Chambers, corporate partnerships fundraiser for CHSW,at Little Harbour said: "This is a real opportunity for businesses to fulfil their corporate social responsibility objectives and is a tangible way for them to make a contribution to such vital aspects of our work." For businesses, the initiative offers an opportunity to support a well-loved local cause which helps to make the most of short and precious lives. The Santander Foundation recently made a donation to help cover the cost of a children's nurse. Alan Eagle, manager of Santander Foundation said: "We know how integral the children's nurses are to the work of the hospice - not only do they provide medical care for the children but they ensure each child's visit is special and full of fun." As part of the package businesses will get a special opportunity to meet the nurse that they are sponsoring at a hospice open day as well as have a certificate of their participation, their business featured on the webpage and mentions in press and social media.

MORE than 200 people helped to make history by visiting a garden in the Helford Passage. The open day at Pedn Billy Garden raised more than £1,500, making it the most successful single event ever held in aid of Cornwall Wildlife Trust (CWT). This is the fourth year for CWT's Open Gardens scheme. The money raised goes towards the trust's work protecting Cornwall's wildlife and wild places. A spokesman for the trust said: "The weather cleared perfectly for a wander around this stunning 12 acre coastal garden, and just the right conditions for enjoying a pasty or cream tea. "Apart from the garden there was also a chance to meet fury creatures brought along by Cornwall Bat Group. "Visitors were delighted to visit Pedn Billy garden which boasts wild flower areas, beautiful specimen trees and terraced borders, ancient woodlands, and it was ablaze with azaleas, magnolias, rhododendrons, camellias and flowering bulbs. "Many even made their way along paths winding down to Port Navas Creek on the Helford River and a private beach." Two further gardens will be opening in the area in aid of CWT. Ethnevas Cottage in Constantine will open on July 6 and Trenarth at High Cross will welcome visitors on August 24. Other gardens are opening across Cornwall. Race to find skilled staff for Mylor boatyard as £1m order book grows

This Cornish-built "gentleman's" launch will soon be leisurely traversing the Norwegian fjords, while the boat yard that built her races to find the skilled staff it needs to keep up with a growing order book. Mylor-based Cockwells marked the Farouk's launch in time-honoured tradition by smashing a bottle of champagne over her bow this week, before its new owner and a party of friends took her out for an exhilarating sea trial. The motor launch will be used by her new owner to travel between his island home and the mainland. A five strong Cockwells team headed by project manager Mark Baker spent seven months building the craft. The luxury boat can sleep two people, with its deck house and internal joinery made from solid teak. Its cockpit can seat 12 guests around two tables and a similar commission would cost you around £180,000, excluding VAT. With a growing £1 million book – which includes a project under way to custom build an eight metre superyacht tender – managing director Dave Cockwell has said that recruiting skilled staff to meet the growing demands of the business is a priority. It is currently looking for skilled workers who can hit the ground running, creating several new permanent roles at the yard. Mr Cockwell said: "We need at least half a dozen new skilled staff from all trades including, engineers, electricians, boat builders and also a project manager or two." Cockwells is anticipating signing yet another new build contract this month, with more orders likely to be secured at forthcoming boat shows, beginning with the Jersey Boat Show this bank holiday weekend.

Truro nurse who set up Facebook group gets national award from bowel cancer charity

A nurse from Truro has been recognised for her pioneering work using social media site Facebook to support bowel cancer patients and their families living in remote parts of Cornwall. Candy Coombe, a colorectal nurse at the Royal Cornwall Hospital (RCH), has won a national Achievement Award from the charity Beating Bowel Cancer. Mrs Coombe, who has worked at RCH for twelve years, has set up a Cornwall Bowel Cancer Support Group alongside the charity. As a colorectal nurse, Candy has daily contact with people experiencing bowel cancer who, alongside their treatment, often benefit from the support of others experiencing similar life changes. To bring people together who might live in remote parts of the county Mrs Coombe set up a Facebook page support group which now has more than 80 members. Mrs Coombe, a mother of two said: "When I heard that I had won the award, I was both shocked and surprised, it took a day or two for the news to actually sink in." The tireless nurse often finds herself offering online support late into the evenings, answering questions from members of the support group or contributing to the site. She said: "At first there was a bit of scepticism over using social networking, thinking it was more for young people, but the reality is very different. "Our members' ages span from over 70 to 30. At the start, people were a bit shy, but now there are lots of conversations, and members have really gained strength from each other in the support that's been shared." Mrs Coombe said people facing bowel cancer needed emotional support as well as facts about their illness. "When people live remotely they can feel very isolated, it's good to talk to others in a similar situation," she said. Mrs Coombe received her award from the charity Beating Bowel Cancer at its annual Patient Day at the Royal College of Surgeons in London. Mark Flannagan, chief executive of Beating Bowel Cancer, said: 'We wanted to reward Candy for her pioneering work helping others through the use of social media. We've been incredibly impressed with the help and support Candy is offering patients in Cornwall and we're so grateful for her support."

The UK's best surfers descend on Watergate Bay this wekeend to compete for the chance to be crowned national champion. Firmly established on the European surfing calendar, The English National Surfing Championships take place from Saturday to Monday. Hosted by Watergate Bay's Extreme Academy, the annual event is organised by Surf Science and Technology students from Cornwall College's Newquay campus. Student Jon Green, who is part of the student organisational team, said: "We're hoping for good weather and some great waves. We spoke to last year's champion, Russell Winter, who said he's looking to retain the title. He's been spending the past few months training in Barbados, so he's definitely one to watch. "We want as many spectators on the beach as possible but we're going to put out plenty of updates on social media so people who can't make it can still feel part of the action. There'll be video interviews with the surfers as they come out of the water and a photographer will be putting out action shots." The event also marks the beginning of the UK Pro Surf Association Tour (UKPSAT), in which the next generation of surfers go head to head with more experienced tour members. Champions will be decided across 14 divisions which include Open, Longboard, Masters, Veterans, Ladies and Junior categories. Newquay's Mark Harris came third in last year's Men's Open, losing to Russell Winter in the final. Mark said: "The English Nationals is the first event of the year so everyone's been training all winter. I've been surfing lots of spots that don't usually break, because of the abnormally large swells, so it's been a good winter to be at home. "Last year the standard in the final was so high and Russell just beat me to it. I've got some new surfboards coming from my sponsor Quiver so hopefully I'll get a good start to the tour. I've always wanted to win the English Nationals as it's got so much history behind it. It is exciting to compete against the best surfers in Britain at my home break at Watergate Bay." This year's associate sponsor is sun protection brand P20. Other sponsors include Cornwall College, Disco Beads, Zumbatastic, Adams Surfboards, Snugg, Lanzarote Retreats, Beachbum, Pomie Grommet, Dryrobe and On The Lip. THE Green Party has given its backing to calls for more powers to be devolved to Cornwall and the creation of a Cornish Assembly. Green Party leader Natalie Bennett visited Cornwall this week and met with Mebyon Kernow leader Dick Cole to give her backing to the calls for more devolution. Natalie said: "The Green Party is committed to the devolution of power, so that decisions get taken at the most appropriate local level. It's for the people of Cornwall to decide in a referendum how much power they want to take back from Westminster. "We are impressed with the collaborative approach Mebyon Kernow has taken in inviting people to join a consultation on the form an Assembly might take. "They have set out their views on how an Assembly for Cornwall might work, but are also asking people to think about what they want. Our local parties in Cornwall will be taking part in the process and we urge everyone who cares about democracy to do the same." Natalie was joined on her visit by Emily McIvor one of the Green Party's candidates in the forthcoming European election. Dick Cole said: "It was a real pleasure to meet with Natalie and Emily to discuss a wide range of social, economic and environmental issues, including the need for democratic reform and the devolution of political power to Cornwall. I am particularly pleased that they have reaffirmed the Green Party's strong support for the establishment of a Cornish Assembly." Following the meeting the leaders went to County Hall where Natalie signed a declaration to support MK's calls for a Cornish Assembly.

Jenna Firth runs in the half-marathon in memory of colleague Noel Perry

A FORMER West Briton reporter has run the Plymouth half-marathon in memory of her colleague, the late Noel Perry.

Jenna Firth worked alongside Mr Perry at the West Briton's office in Helston as a trainee reporter.

Mr Perry passed away after a short battle with cancer last year.

Ms Firth, 27, who lives near Breage, said he was an inspirational character and was dearly missed.

She successfully completed the half-marathon on Sunday and has raised money for Cancer Research UK.

"I always said to myself I really wanted to do something like this and when it came to January I just went out and booked it," she said.

"It was a very emotional day. You can read people's stories pinned to their back and people were shouting encouragement from the side. It was one of the most surreal things I've done.

"I've raised around £300 and there's still money coming in."

She said Mr Perry was a remarkable character, and paid tribute to him.

"I genuinely haven't met anyone like him again and he's been a massive inspiration in my life," she said.

"Just one year ago, he was still here with his contacts list filed neatly away in his brain recalling practically every phone number he'd ever phoned and remembering every event within a 10-mile radius.

"He always knew someone who knew someone who knew that person you wanted to speak to, could analyse every James Bond film made, able to answer any movie trivia question no matter how absurd, spilling food on his tie and rolling out pun after pun."

"He was a friend and quite wonderful."

6 Rifles in Cyprus: Rations - Gourmet or Grotesque?

The 6 Rifles are in Cyprus for a two week training exercise - and have been joined by our reporter Esme Ashcroft. Here is her third report from the Mediterranean island. THEY say an army marches on its stomach, and that is certainly true for the soldiers of 6 Rifles who have to eat almost double their daily recommendation of calories while out on a exercise. Despite the striking setting, it is near impossible to cook for a platoon of soldiers while camping on the barren hills of Episkopi in Cyprus. Stuffed with all the nutrients and energy needed to keep them going, the soldiers are given Army issued 24-hour ration packs which contain around 4,500 calories.
Incredibly, the food, which is neatly packed together in a small box, can all be warmed up with just a fire and a tin-can of warm water. At first I was sceptical. I have an intense dislike of Pot Noodles, and anything vacuum packed immediately arouses my suspicions. But I was pleasantly surprised. The chicken and tomato pasta was remarkably edible, and the addition of a miniature bottle of Tabasco sauce helped season my dinner-in-a-bag to taste. Moreover a few items were genuinely pleasant. If they sold the same brand of oat bar, chocolate and hazelnut paste and ginger biscuits at Tesco in Redruth I confess I would buy them. However the fruit puree, which looked and tasted like baby food, and the strange toothpaste container full of peanut butter left me cold. In addition to the food, each pack contains the basic tea, coffee, powdered "beverage whitening" milk, matches, water purification tablets and a spork. Rifleman Daryl Brooks from Falmouth said: "The food isn't bad actually, I have definitely had worse at places in Cornwall." Away from the exercise and in the more permanent base of Radio Sonde soldiers are fed in a canteen style kitchen. Laid out like school dinners, each evening they get a choice of two main dishes, a portion of carbohydrates, a portion of vegetables and a pudding. Corp Simon Longworth said: "The chefs do really well to make the best they can out of the food they have."

World Pilot Gig Championships get underway on Scilly

The 25th World Pilot Gigs Championships are underway on the Isles of Scilly this weekend. The first races of the record breaking event saw veterans teams vying for a place on the podium on Friday night. In the womens races, Mounts Bay's team lifted the trophy, while in the mens events, Caradon were triumphant. This year marks the silver jubillee of an event which started with 19 boats and was named a world championship by the founders as a bit of fun. It has grown year on year and this time around an astonishing 150 boats will go under starters' orders for the iconic long race from St Agnes to St Mary's at lunchtime. Although the event is famously good natured,on Friday night an outbreak of vandalism marred proceedings when paint was thrown at a shop window on St Mary's and there were reports of damage to the quay. A number of teams were frustrated in their efforts to get to Scilly yesterday when the islands remained bound in thick fog for much of the day meaning very few places could land prior take off. But it was full steam ahead this morning when flights left the mainland on time and the Scillonian departed Penzance on time for the first of two trips.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service says it will still respond to emergencies as strike action continues

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service has reassured residents in the county that crews will still be able to respond to emergencies - despite crews walking out for a second day following a dispute over pensions. Fire Brigades' Union members will continue the action over the May Bank Holiday weekend, with further strikes tomorrow (May 4) from 10am to 3pm. The FBU has also announced 'action short of strike action' will start from Sunday, May 4 at 3.01pm, until 12pm on May 9. This means fire service personnel will be able to refuse to undertake voluntary overtime, non-contractual overtime or voluntary additional hours. CFRS deputy chief fire officer Paul Walker said: "We have contingency plans in place to maintain minimum levels of cover during the strike action. "The most important thing to remember is that if you do have a fire, get out of the building, stay out and call 999 - you will get an emergency response. "We will continue to respond to emergency calls and will obviously prioritise those where lives are at risk. "Public and fire fighter safety remains of paramount importance and we will give the best service to the people of Cornwall within the limitations of the resources available to us." Mr Walker has warned residents, businesses and visitors to remain vigilant during the strikes. Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service's advice to residents is to take extra care with these six steps: - Make sure you have smoke alarms on at least every level of your home - Smoke alarms save lives, but only if they're working. Test them regularly - Stub cigarettes out properly and dispose of them carefully - Plan your escape route and make sure everyone knows how to get out in a fire - Take extra care in the kitchen and never leave cooking unattended - Do not overload electrical sockets. Watch out for faulty and over-heating electrical equipment, and wiring/cables

Cornwall's cricket selectors have made three changes for their Unicorns Knock Out Cup game against Devon at Truro on Sunday (11am), from the 12 that were due to take on Wales Minor Counties in Newport last Sunday. Callington and Cardiff MCCU opener Jake Libby is unavailable, as are the Gloucestershire pairing of Liam Norwell and Tom Shrewsbury, who will have to wait for their Cornwall debuts. Replacing them are the Smeeth brothers, Alex and Ben. Injury prevented Alex from playing in the Trophy last year. He only played in half the championship games which included the game at Corsham where he hit a county best of 99. Ben last played for the county in 2012. St Austell's Michael Bone is also included. He made his county debut, on his home ground against Berkshire, in the final championship game of last season. It came off the back of a successful league campaign where he finished seventh in the ECB Cornwall Premier League averages scoring 578 runs at an average of more than 38. Truro's Callum Whittaker is set to make his Cornwall debut, having played in two games for Devon last year.Cornwall (from): M L Robins (capt) (Callington), SA Harvey (wk), K J Snell, C P Whittaker (all Truro), C B F Purchase, T P S Hughes (both Grampound Road), A D Angove (Falmouth), M J Bone (St Austell), A G Smeeth, B A Smeeth, S C Hockin (all Werrington), Shakil Ahmed (Redruth). With Dorset yet to play, and Wiltshire topping the group after their narrow victory at Instow, a Cornish defeat tomorrow will make it extremely unlikely they will lreach a third successive quarter-final.

The latest batch of apprentice chefs has graduated from Jamie Oliver's Fifteen Cornwall training programme, run by the Cornwall Food Foundation. More than 200 guests gathered at the Newquay restaurant on April 29 to celebrate the culmination of a 16-month intensive programme where young people aged 16-24 who were not in education, employment or training, learned to become professional chefs. Hosted by Jamie's own mentor, Gennaro Contaldo, the ceremony praised all six apprentices, showing short clips from specially commissioned films highlighting their experiences during programme, along with words of encouragement from the Fifteen Cornwall team. Training and development chef Karl Jones who is in charge of training at the Fifteen Cornwall kitchen said: "Our apprentices have had a busy year covering all sections in the Fifteen Cornwall kitchen. "By training our guys in a real working environment we were able to get them to a great level within their 12 months with us. "Not only have they gained a professional qualification, they have also learnt skills in butchery, baking and fish filleting. They have also had a month's work experience in some of the country's best restaurants." One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the 'Apprentice of the Year' award, given to Jordan George of Penzance, and the 'Personal Development' award, given to Chris Emmins of Bodmin. Each year the awards are presented to the two apprentices who have made the most significant journey within the kitchen and training programme. Other awards included 'The One Who Really Gets It' awarded to Emma Bourton; the 'True Believer' award presented by Fifteen Cornwall, which went to Gennaro Contaldo; the 'Progression' award, given to Gemma Davies; the 'True Believer' award presented by the Cornwall Food Foundation to Simon Burt; and the 'Most Inspirational Chef' award, presented to trainer chefs Stephanie Clark and Jack Bristow. Fifteen Cornwall has already welcomed the next group of apprentices to the kitchen.
