Dentist Edward Mills of Truro Dental Care struck off for cheating NHS out of £4,000

A DENTIST has been struck off after a hearing was told he cheated the NHS out of £4,000.

A public hearing of the General Dental Council's (GDC) professional conduct committee was told Edward Mills made false claims to the NHS about treatment he had given to 43 different patients at Truro Dental Care, Lemon Street, Truro, between 2009 and 2011.

The committee found Mr Mills made a large number of dishonest claims to the NHS for remuneration. He claimed for posting out oral hygiene leaflets to patients, along with oral health "passports" and prescriptions for fluoride products.

It concluded he must have known that he was not entitled to make claims to the NHS for these activities, noting: "Mr Mills' dishonesty was not an isolated incident.

"He made a series of dishonest claims over a period of many months. Although the amount of money he gained was relatively small, that money was wrongly diverted from the public purse and was not used to provide NHS treatment to patients as it should have been, thus depriving patients of NHS dental care."

Mr Mills has the right to appeal the decision within 28 days.

AN EMINENT scientist and mother of two who died after breaking her neck in a fall at her father's home in Camborne was a "tragic accident," a coroner has ruled. Alison Campbell, 49, was enjoying a family holiday in Reskadinnick, with her two sons, Alexander 7, and James, 9, when the tragedy happened.

Her eldest son found her body lying in the fetal position at the bottom of the stairs on the morning of July 28 last year. Mrs Campbell's father, Peter, a retired solicitor, told Cornwall's deputy assistant coroner, Barrie Van Den Berg, that he had woken in the night after hearing a "high pitched yell and a bump."

He said: "I heard nothing further and went back to sleep. The following morning the eldest son came in and said there was something wrong with mummy." They covered her body with a blanket in an attempt to keep her warm. Paramedics arrived soon after but she was pronounced dead.

Mrs Campbell, an expert in immunology and asthma, worked for United Chemicals  of Belgium (UCB) in Brussels and lived in Switzerland. The court heard how she had been relaxing on the evening of July 27 and had drunk some wine. A postmortem revealed she had fractured her vertebrae and had a blood alcohol concentration of 149 mg in 100 ml. (Nearly one and half times over the drink drive limit).

A DYNAMIC new Cornish microbrewery scooped the top prize in a competition run by The Cornishman, West Briton and Cornish Guardian.

Rebel Brewing Company, based in Penryn, won a £10,000 advertising campaign, plus support from a mentor and a team of designers at Cornwall & Devon Media.

Lucy Roberson, founder of Guardian Equestrian in St Agnes and the inventor of a specialist horse blanket which has already achieved national recognition in the few months since its launch, picked up the second prize of £7,500 worth of advertising.

Joint third place went to The Cornish Surf Wax Company, from Perranporth; The Apple Tree Cafe near Land's End; and Aberfal Outdoor Pursuits in Falmouth, who will each be given £2,500 worth of advertising space in the three papers, as well as their website, www.thisiscornwall.co.uk.

The prizes for the Local Business Accelerators (LBA) competition were awarded at a presentation ceremony at Trelissick House in Feock, where each of the businesses were given a specialist mentor to help grow their business.

Four other shortlisted firms – Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens near Penzance, Fal Oyster Company at Mylor, Tall Ships Creamery ice cream sellers at Charlestown and Lafafa in Penzance – were given £1,000 each to spend on advertising as a runners-up prize.

Robe Lowe, managing director of Rebel, said he was delighted with the award.

"It is amazing because it is just going to launch my business at a critical point in our development," he said.

"Having this is the difference between getting there eventually and putting us out there immediately and showing the whole of Cornwall who we are and what we do.

"Even the smallest mention in the West Briton is massive for a business."

Miss Roberson, 25, who makes specialist winter horse rugs that stop horses from going through electric fences, sold her first product in October last year.

She said: "I am just so excited. It will be an amazing platform for us.

"As yet our advertising has been online but I want to reach the riders at home who read our local paper because that is what I have always done."

The team of mentors who will now look after each of the winning businesses include Kim Conchie, chief executive of Cornwall Chamber of Commerce; Simon Tregoning, managing director of Classic Cottages; Dave Meneer, director of Wolf Rock marketing; Neil Scott, BID manager at Totally Truro; Rachael Jones, founder of Fit 'N' Fun Kids and Leading Women UK; Mark Picken, managing director of marketing, PR and design agency MPad; Jean Mooney, from Truro and Penwith College; and Lucy Jones, owner of The Cornish Food Box Company and a winner of last year's LBA competition.

The Local Business Accelerators campaign is part of a nationwide initiative backed by Prime Minister David Cameron, Governor of the Bank of England Mervyn King and Dragon's Den star Deborah Meaden.

It was set up to highlight how local press advertising can work to drive growth for small and medium-sized businesses.

A picture of a speeding car produced by an artist known for his Falmouth and Helford River landscapes is expected to reach £60,000 at auction.

The artwork by Cyril Power was originally thought to be worth about £20, but turned out to be a classic print.

The American owner has left the work hanging on the wall of his garage for 25 years, unaware of its significance.

But Tony Wilson, head of automobilia at Bonhams spotted it at the Automobilia Exhibition in California spotted it.

It was then identified as Speed Trial, inspired by Malcolm Campbell's Bluebird which broke the landspeed record in 1931 after hitting 246mph.

Rupert Worrall, head of prints at Bonhams, said: "This is a particularly nice Power that will doubtless attract a lot of interest from people who collect his work and which grows in popularity each year."

Cyril Edward Power (1872 – 1951) was an English artist who helped co-found The Grosvenor School Of Modern Art in London in 1925.

In the last year of his life he completed 89 paintings, mainly landscapes of the surrounding areas, often the Helford River and the Falmouth area.

He died in London aged 78.

THE FIRE service has delivered a reminder about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning after attending a gas leak at a holiday cottage near Morvah last night.

Five people were treated by ambulance crews at the cottage after displaying symptoms of the deadly poisoning which kills people each year in Britain.

The occupants had called the emergency services shortly after 10pm after a detector picked up a higher than usual reading.

Penzance Station Manager Mark Salter said he believed the problem was caused by a faulty woodburner.

He said: "We go to an increasing number of carbon monoxide cases at this time of year.

"We would encourage residents to buy a carbon monoxide detector and to ensure that gas appliances and chimneys are regularly inspected and monitored."

Carbon monoxide symptoms include headaches or dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, tiredness, chest or stomach pain, erratic behaviour or visual problems.

An ambulance spokesman confirmed it attended an incident in the Pendeen area and treated a number of patients at the scene.

Truro City looking for home joy against Clarets

Truro City will be loooking for their first win of 2013 when they take on promotion hopefuls Chelmsford City  at Treyew Road on Saturday (3pm).

The league's bottom  club last won back on December 1 with a 2-0 home victory over Tonbridge Angels and despite some encouraging performances they have taken just two points out of a possible 21 from their last seven games.

And they are sure to find the Essex visitors tough opposition, though Clarets boss Glenn Pennyfather is also expecting a difficult game for his sixth-placed team who are only out of the play-off places on goal difference.

He said. "Truro are a decent side who've been very unlucky this season. We know from our home game against them that they'll be no pushovers and what they've been through together will have made them stronger. We're both back off the enforced 'winter break' and we're looking forward to the game."

Truro lost narrowly 3-2  in the teams' meeting in Essex back in September and manager Lee Hodges know how strong  a side Chelmsford are.

He said: "Chelmsford are one of the best sides in the league and I rate them very highly."

After having their last two games against Sutton and Eastleigh postponed, City will be raring to get back into action before away trips to Dover Ath and Hayes and Yeading on the following two Saturdays.

Hodges will miss the game through suspension and there are no new injury worries, with Marcus Martin returning after serving his one match ban.

City's boss added: "We had a good training session last night, with everyone there and in good spirits and everyone very keen to play a match again.

"From the weather forecast, I can't see a problem for tomorrow so we're all hoping for a really good game and a good crowd to cheer on the boys.  There's no doubt it's going to be a very tough match."

Truro squad:  Luke McCormick, Bobby Hopkinson, Calron Hall, Jake Ash, Marcus Martin, Ben Williams, Joe Broad, Cody Cooke, Les Afful, Andy Watkins, Kieffer Moore, Barry Hayles, Martin Watts, Matt Wright.

The Falmouth Beach Hotel faces an uncertain future as the owners have decided to put it on the market.
After more than 30 years running the family business, Hazel Evans is selling up following a devastating fire which ripped through the building last year.
Planning permission was recently granted for the hotel to be rebuilt on the site, but no work will begin on that project for the time being.
A spokesman for agents Christie and Co, which has been instructed to prepare the business for sale, said: "Since the fire (Mrs Evans) has been carefully considering the hotel rebuild project, her future plans and possible retirement from the hospitality industry.
"Consequently she has proposed a closure of the site and rebuilding work."
A potential buyer who can redevelop the hotel site is now being sought.
Just 39 rooms and the leisure complex were left after the fire in April. The remains that could not be saved were demolished and the site cleared and the leisure facilities opened in October.

Children from a Cornish school got swept up in the Gangnam Style craze when a Falmouth policeman came to give some dancing tips. The children from Devoran School near Truro threw themselves into the iconic Gangnam Style dance made famous by South Korean rapper Psy. The school was inspired to take part after police from Falmouth raised thousands of pounds for charity by making a video showing their interpretation of the international hit. In line with the police, Devoran children who took part in the video made donations for Joshua Wilson, 12, from Lancashire, who has been left with complex physical needs following surgery on a brain tumour. Sarah Kerrison from Devoran School said: "We have a donation day club and at the end of the month they choose a charity to donate to. It seems a really good cause and it's a nice way of doing something different. "The children are absolutely over the moon. They have all been wearing their shades and are very excited."
