A Cornish town stepped back in time and into the sights and smells of a 19th century Christmas.

Members of a local volunteer group donned Victorian hats, bonnets, suits and skirts during a Dickensian weekend in Looe.

They paraded the streets in traditional dress singing carols, ringing hand bells, and eating roasted chestnuts as part of the first event of its kind in the town.

Dozens of youngsters from a Brownie group, dance school and youth theatre performed songs and other routines.

Marilyn King, chairman of the University of Third Age in Looe who organised the event, said it was "wonderful spectacle" for the town.

She said: "The Dickensian weekend was a great success. Considering it was the first time we've held such an event in Looe, the turnout was impressive.

"The youngsters provided great support and enthusiasm and we're really grateful for all their performances.

"Although there was a tiny bit of drizzle yesterday, we were grateful for a lovely, sunny day on Saturday.

"Next year we hope the event will be even bigger with traditional market stalls, like at similar events elsewhere.

"It's such a lovely way to bring everyone together celebrating Christmas."
