For the girls, 501 were called Lily, derived from the flower with some contending it is a sign of purity.

The trend for names in the South West was similar to the picture across the rest of England and Wales.

Harry and Amelia were the most popular names given to babies in 2011, replacing Oliver and Olivia from 2010.

Amelia climbed four places to take Olivia's crown as the number one girls' name. Harry jumped two places to top spot in boys' names, pushing Oliver into second place.

Major movers include Jacob, climbing five places from 12 to seven to replace George in the boys' top ten. Ava and Isabella replaced Evie and Chloe in the ten most popular names for baby girls.
