The Chief Executive of Cornwall Council Kevin Lavery has confirmed that he has been offered the post of Chief Executive at Wellington City Council but says that he has not yet made a decision on whether to take the role.
"I have enjoyed my time as the Chief Executive of Cornwall Council and will be sorry to leave the authority and Cornwall" he said.  "I now need to consider the terms of the offer very carefully and discuss this with my family before making a final decision".
"I will be spending the next few days considering this offer and hope to make an announcement early next week."
The confirmation comes after a period of confusion as County Hall could neither confirm nor deny numerous media reports that Mr Lavery had taken the new post in New Zealand.
Several councillors said they were first made aware of the possible departure of the £200,000 a year chief executive when contacted by the press.
The news broke yesterday afternoon that Mr Lavery had been offered the top job at Wellington, the capital of New Zealand.
The post carries a salary of $420,000 NZ dollars - equivalent to £215,000.
Jeremy Rowe, leader of the Liberal Democrat opposition party at Cornwall Council said the important thing now was to ensure that there was no "golden goodbye" if Mr Lavery did take up the new post.
