BIG smiles filled the faces of little visitors to Wadebridge Fire Station open day on Saturday as they saw real-life "Fireman Sams" in action.

The day was filled with demonstrations and gave youngsters the chance to climb on board a fire engine and try on the uniforms.

Staff from the Flashpoint Lifeskills Centre, based in Bodmin, attended with an interactive learning centre which simulates potentially dangerous and hazardous situations to deliver safety messages to children and vulnerable people.

Wadebridge Fire Station manager Tim Jones said: "The open day was well attended by the public and it was a very enjoyable day. Having the teams from Flashpoint Lifeskills, HM Coastguard and the Red Cross gave it an extra dimension, as they provided some invaluable personal and safety tips on general life skills.

"On the day the fire crews carried out an exercise on a car that was involved in a simulated road traffic collision.

"They demonstrated how we cut away and removed the doors and roof to remove the casualty.

"The demonstration is always popular with the public and the team did a fantastic job.

"A big thank you for all who attended and to Liz Dyke who provided refreshments, to raise money for the Firefighters Charity."
