A NEWQUAY man who worked tirelessly as an "ambassador" for former Restormel and mid Cornwall's Neighbourhood Watch has lost his battle with cancer.
John Adams leaves behind a "legacy of outstanding commitment" after 12 years of dedication to Neighbourhood Watch (NHW).
He spent eleven of those years as chairman of Restormel Neighbourhood Watch Forum, until he stepped down from the role following his cancer diagnosis last year.
However, Mr Adams continued to work behind the scenes and even battled through difficult times during his illness in order to attend NHW committee meetings and ensure the smooth transition of a new chair.
He helped set up many Neighbourhood Watches within the old Restormel district and continued to do so when Restormel became part of the existing unitary authority.
During his time in the NHW office at Newquay Police Station, Mr Adams volunteered for the force, overseeing the daily running of the office with the help of other volunteers. Mr Adams also became a board member of Devon and Cornwall Community Watch Association.
Newquay Inspector Dave Meredith said Mr Adams was a "real ambassador" for Neighbourhood Watch whose "legacy of outstanding commitment to crime prevention is a beacon for us all".
He said: "John was a familiar face at Newquay police station and always went out of his way to ensure Neighbourhood Watch supported the police.
"The hard work and dedication shown by John during his service with Neighbourhood Watch went a long way in supporting the police in building safer communities together with our partners and volunteers."
Mr Adams sadly passed away on January 9.
In November 2008 Mr Adams was awarded a DaCCWA Certificate of Excellence in recognition of his "outstanding commitment" and "achievement" in crime reduction, community safety and improved quality of life through community engagement and voluntary activity.
His outstanding contribution to voluntary work was recognised by Volunteer Cornwall in 2011 when John was highly commended in the Community Safety Volunteer category, sponsored by Devon and Cornwall Police. Whist Mr Adams was too ill to personally attend, a representative received the certificate on his behalf.
Also in October 2011, John went on to receive a DaCCWA Founder's Award in recognition of outstanding personal commitment to DaCCWA and the community through extraordinary voluntary activity.
Mr Meredith added: "He will be sorely missed throughout Neighbourhood Watch, Devon and Cornwall Community Watch Association (DaCCWA) and the police community but his legacy of outstanding commitment to crime prevention is a beacon for us all."
