VOTERS near Helston have overwhelmingly chosen a Conservative as their newest councillor.
Walter Norman Sanger took more than twice as many votes as any other candidate in the by-election for the Cornwall Council seat representing St Keverne and Meneage, and more than 10 times as many as the Labour Party man. He is a former chairman of the defunct Kerrier District Council.
The totals from the poll yesterday (Thursday) were:
Walter Sanger received 585 votes

Nicholas David Driver (Liberal Democrats) - 279

Sandy Martin (UK Independence Party) - 141

Steven Frederick Richards (Labour Party) - 52.
The turnout was 28.76 per cent.

The seat became available following the death of popular councillor Pam Lyne in May. She had represented the area of the Lizard at all local authority levels for more than 40 years.
