Five fire engines were sent to tackle a burning garage in North Cornwall yesterday afternoon, amid fears flames could spread to a store of heating oil.

Fire officers received a flurry of calls from members of the public after flames were spotted at Tregolds Lane, St Merryn, Padstow at about 3.10pm.

Initially two pumps from Padstow were sent with one engine from Wadebridge.

When crews arrived, they realised the fire was spreading to the house near the garage.

Firefighters at the scene called for back-up from more pumps from St Columb and Newquay.

Four members of the team wore breathing apparatus using two main jets and two hose reel jets to battle the flames.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "There was concern of the fire spreading to a 12,000-litre heating oil container near the rear of the property, which was being cooled by a ground monitor.

"The fire was contained to the ground floor of the premises, the first floor of the premises was smoke-logged."

By around 4.40pm crews had brought the fire under control.
