ST AUSTELL Brewery is urging MPs to join calls to stop beer prices rising.
Managing director James Staughton has written to every local MP in Cornwall and Devon asking them to back the campaign for a freeze in beer tax in the Budget on March 20.
He wants them to sign up to a Parliamentary motion, EDM 703, to show their support.
It is for a wide campaign led by the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA), the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), and the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA), to freeze beer duty and scrap the controversial beer duty 'escalator' in the Budget.
Mr Staughton said with 300,000 young people working in the industry – which is one in 12 of 16-25-year-olds in employment – pubs could grow and create new jobs, with the right politics.
"I hope all the MPs I've written to will support this campaign and back this motion in Parliament," he said.
"It is clear that beer and pubs are an absolutely vital part of our local economy, especially for young people.
"The current Government policy is counterproductive, as it is shutting down pubs, and costing jobs.
"Instead, we could be creating jobs, and helping to lead the country out of recession – as well as ensuring that our much loved local pubs can prosper."
