CORNWALL Council is owed more than a quarter of a million pounds in parking fines new figures show.
The council currently has more than 3,300 fines which have not been paid – ten times more than there were last year.
The figures relate to Penalty Charge Notices (PCN) which are issued for on and off street parking offences.
Responding to a Freedom of Information (FoI) request the council revealed that for 2012/13 it is currently owed £263,247.44 in fines from penalty charge notices.
In the year to date 33,256 notices have been issued and 3,358 are still outstanding.
In 2011/12 the council issued 36,093 notices and had 351 outstanding worth £36,251.49.
Details were also given for how many warrants have been issued to pursue unpaid fines – in 2011/12 there were 2,835 warrants issued and in 2012/13 to date there have been 2,236.
The council said that despite the high figure of unpaid fines it was confident that by the end of the year the number outstanding will be closer to the figure for the previous year.
In a statement the council said: "The figure for 2012/13 includes a high number of current cases. That is PCN issued in the weeks before the figure was prepared.
"These may not have been paid for many reasons. The early payment discount lasts 14 days, there may be an appeal. As the process for each case moves on most of the recent cases will move from unpaid to paid or cancelled on appeal.
"The total of unpaid PCN varies throughout the year as we collect money for PCN we are constantly issuing more. At year end the unpaid PCN for the year decrease as we complete the collection process on each outstanding PCN.
"With regard to 2011/12 we have had a long time for all the cases to be paid and thus the outstanding sum has decreased. The same will happened after year end to 2012/13."
