LAUNCESTON is busy creating its own Olympic legacy with the relaunch of the town's old athletics club.
Launceston Athletics Club, which was founded around 50 years ago by Owen Slater, is being restarted by coach and administrator David Brown, treasurer Conrad Dubey and Crunch Gym owners and coaches Mark Quick and Merwyn Davis.
It joined forces with Cornwall Athletics and Plymouth Athletics to host Star Track Day, giving youngsters aged 8 to 14 professional coaching at Launceston College.
"It was a very successful day," said Mr Quick. "The feedback was fantastic. The children loved it. They didn't want to finish."
The young people took part in sprint relays, learnt to use reverser boards, tried indoor shot put and discus and learnt the technique for the long jump and triple jump. All received free kit bags with a bottle, ball and T-shirt.
The club is now running Wednesday and Friday evening sessions for adults and children, with the next one tomorrow, and organisers are looking for experienced coaches and other volunteers who would be willing to help on at least one evening per month.
"The old club had a lot of indoor equipment so we've inherited shot, discuses, long jump and high jumps, hurdles and reverser boards," said Mr Quick. "We've got nearly all the equipment needed for an indoor club.
"What we've got to work for is the outdoor facilities. We'd like to hear from potential sponsors or anyone who has land which we could use."
