Cornwall will get its first Holiday Inn hotel but there are fears it could come at a price of traffic chaos on a main gateway into Truro.
The 80-bedroom hotel and seven shops were given full planning permission by Cornwall Council to build on the corner of the park-and-ride roundabout on the A390.
The council also gave outline planning permission for 93 new homes with 35 per cent affordable housing on the same site.
As part of the conditions attached to the planning permission a new pedestrian crossing with traffic lights will be set up on the A390.
Rob Nolan, Cornwall Council member for Truro Boscawen, said he was disppointed with the decision and the possible impact of the new shops on nearby villages.
He said: "No work has been done on the effect these new shops will have on Threemilestone or Chacewater village centres. It would be disastrous for both communities if they were left with empty shops, as a result of what is a new village high street with a pub, restaurant, convenience store and bakers being built across the road.
"I'm also astonished that the council want to connect this development to Threemilestone with a lighted pedestrian crossing over the dual carriageway."
