Hundreds of schoolchildren have been learning "close-up" about the journey of their food from farmyard to fork.

Some 650 pupils from 19 Cornish schools met with food producers and farmers at the Farm & Country discovery day to "bridge the widening gap" between the rural reality and public understanding of farming.

Hilary Wood, of Cornwall Food and Farming Group, said: "All too often children do not know where their food comes from – when asked, a common answer is 'the supermarket'."

Christopher Riddle, secretary of Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association, claimed a lack of farming understanding was "developing rapidly".

James Cudmore, Year 4 teacher at Wadebridge Primary School, said the event on Wednesday, at the Royal Cornwall Showground, enabled the children to learn "close-up" about the environment and farming.
