WITH two vital cup ties and a crucial weekend of league games, has there been a more important seven days in the history of Helston Athletic Football Club?
Last night the Blues were bidding to reach the final of the Throgmorton Cup at the expense of Premier Division champions-elect Bodmin Town.
On Saturday, they must beat Penryn Athletic if they are to have any chance of keeping their slim title hopes alive.
And next Tuesday they face Bodmin again in a Cornwall Senior Cup final replay.
In the space of a week Helston could have everything or nothing still to play for.
Manager Sid Taylor admitted: "It's a massive week for us. I do think the league is done and dusted now, but we still have it all to play for in the cups against Bodmin."
After dropping five points in their last two games, Helston's destiny is out of their hands. Leaders Godolphin were in action at St Dennis last night and if they win there and beat Truro City at Treyew Road on Saturday they will be crowned Division One West champions.
Losing out on the title, and possible promotion, will be a cruel blow for Taylor's men, who have scored a staggering 119 goals this season – 33 more than Godolphin.
They have lost just two league games all season, their last defeat, at local rivals Porthleven on Good Friday, could prove costly.
Taylor admits the league is now Godolphin's to lose.
He said: "It is bitterly disappointing to see ourselves in this position now, but that is something we are going to have to accept.
Consistent
"To win the league you have to be consistent and Godolphin have been the best team over the course of the season.
"Our minds were on the Senior Cup final against Porthleven and that could have cost us the league.
"We definitely want to go up and if that doesn't happen this year then we will go again next season."
Helston face Bodmin a third time in the space of two weeks when the sides meet again on Tuesday at Truro City's Treyew Road in their Senior Cup final replay.
The Blues were desperately unlucky not to beat Bodmin at Saltash on Easter Monday when they played out an entertaining goalless draw.
Helston were backed by around 200 fans in south east Cornwall and they will be taking two coaches for supporters to Truro next week.
Taylor said: "I thought the lads were magnificent against Bodmin last time around. We were really unlucky not to win the game but we have another couple of games against them to show what we can do."
