An iconic 62ft-high Celtic cross has been celebrated as representing a proud piece of Cornish heritage after it was lifted in to place beside the Tamar Bridge.

The erection of the Cornish Cross, which now sits in Saltash, marks the completion of a three-year project and will welcome visitors and locals as they cross the bridge in to Cornwall.

Standing at more than 20 metres, the cross, which was originally designed for the Millenium celebrations, had to be lifted into position on Saturday night by two huge cranes before it was bolted to the floor. It had been planned to put the structure in position sooner, however unsuitable weather had led to postponements.

Fowey-based sculptor Simon Thomas, who designed the structure, said: "The sculpture not only represents a proud Cornish heritage, but also the Cornwall of today which is an exciting and vibrant place, open to new ideas and celebrating its uniqueness.

"The Cornish Cross truly marks the gateway to Cornwall, inviting visitors and welcoming travellers home."

The construction of the cross was a collaborative process led by Newquay-based Gateguards. The spars, which are over 16 metres in length, are made of glass and carbon fibre. The whole structure comprises of over 6,000 individual geometric pieces, and was worked on by ten people. It appears to be made of pure copper, with a head containing samples of other metals mined in Cornwall.

Spokesman for the project and chairman of the Saltash Waterfront Resident's Association Liam Bradley said: "It has taken three years to get the cross in place and it looks remarkable. Simon's vision has created a stunning piece of public art that will stand as a monument to Cornwall for years to come. We would like to thank everyone involved for their commitment and enthusiasm."

Work continues this week to place the protective cowl at the base and then to lay grass to complete a cairn effect.
