A MEMORIAL project has been launched for a Falmouth schoolgirl who died of cancer.

St Francis School wants to install a pirate ship for the children to play on in memory of former pupil Chloe Edwards.

The idea of a "pirate ship for a princess" came because Chloe loved playing pirates with her friends.

The eight-year-old died in December in a German hospital where she had been undergoing treatment for a neuroblastoma.

Her mother, Nicola, visited the school for the official fundraising campaign launch, when children dressed as pirates and princesses and released balloons.

She said: "It is such a lovely idea. She was very piratical and when she was in Germany she made up a pirate game.

"It is lovely the school cares so much."

Five of Chloe's best friends on the organising committee, with staff and parents, are already planning events, including a fashion show in December and a school disco.

Molly, 9, said: "We want to get it done before our class, which she was in, leaves, so we have 18 months.

"It is really important as Chloe loved to play pirates and princesses."

Nicky Sutton, music, art, dance and drama co-ordinator at the school, said: "It is important for us as a school community and for the children to have something positive to focus on. It is a lasting memorial that will give the children at school immense pleasure."

A Facebook page has been created called 'pirate ship for a princess' and the committee is asking businesses to sponsor or donate to the project. It would also like to hear from anyone with new or nearly new clothes that could be donated for the fashion show.

If built from scratch, it could cost £20,000, but the school would like to hear from anyone who could provide a decommissioned fishing vessel that could be converted.

The friends of the school group has given the committee £4,000, and a model ship totalizer, made by teaching assistant, Steph Sowell, will track fundraising progress.
