YOUNG racing demons from Truro will be battling it out on one of the country's most prestigious circuits this weekend.

Pupils from Penair and Richard Lander schools have qualified for the national finals of the Greenpower electric car contest on Sunday.

Penair School is taking three cars in a field of 75 student-built vehicles from across the UK.

Martin Erents, Penair teacher, said: "It's a distance race and the challenge is to drive as far as possible in four hours with only three battery changes allowed.

"All cars have to have the same batteries and motors so it's down to the design of the vehicle and team spirit."

The competition, which is organised to inspire young people to become engineers, is well supported at Penair and has been sponsored by Western Power Distribution.

Mr Erents said: "All three cars have been built during after-school activities which are well supported by parents and staff. Penair's Greenpower Group is very popular.

"Membership numbers are growing steadily and we hope to have a girls' team soon."

Richard Lander will be competing in their car, RLR1, which has been built in the school's technology workshop.
