Falmouth School has announced its aspirations to buy the former Budock Hospital site next door to enhance sport facilities for itself and the wider community.
The plan includes the creation of a new multi-game area, sports pitch and all weather, flood lit artificial pitch.
In order to fund the purchase and development, the site the school owns across the main road at Union Corner would be sold.
Head teacher Sandra Critchley said this area cannot be used by the school because of its location.
And one of the other main fields is a 20 minute walk away because there is no access across the hospital site.
She said the proposal would consolidate the site and address the growth of the town.
"It will be an amazing asset for the community," she said. "Many sports clubs have to go out of town to train because the facilities are not available."
The school would like to get the support of the community for the proposal and is holding a public meeting on May 14 at 4.30pm.
NHS Property Services Ltd, which owns the site, has told the school it intends to put it on the open market.
