Since arriving over the Bank Holiday weekend the French sailors competing in the Sailtica race have been enjoying the best of Fowey's hospitality, embracing a few Cornish traditions and even beating the locals at their own game.
On the afternoon of Thursday, May 7, upon the lush green lawn of the Fowey Hall Hotel, battle lines were drawn, Fowey in one corner, France in the other, competition in the air, and smiles upon the faces.
The subsequent game of Cornish Rules Croquet resulted in a victory for the sailors, who on Friday will be departing for Pornichet, South Brittany, in the return leg of the Sailtica race and an even bigger prize.
The original departure date was delayed by 24-hours due to the forecast strong winds set to batter Fowey today.
