Despite the tough conditions for today's Trevornick 10 mile Multi Terrain race, round six of the Cornwall Grand Prix Series it was a successful day for those returning from long term and short term injuries, with Kevin Toher (Newquay and Par AC) and Emma Stepto (Cornwall AC) winning their respective Men's and Ladies' races easily, writes Alan Rowling.
The race, round six of the Cornwall Grand Prix Series sponsored by Cornwall Glass and Glazing, attracted 308 runners to the Holywell Bay Leisure Park Newquay last eager to take on the challenge of a scenic but undulating course over the grassland and coastal footpaths of Cubert Common.
Toher, who has been sidelined with achilles tendon and back problems since his last race in March 2012, finished 61 seconds ahead of Dan Alsop (St Austell Running Club) with Tony Brewer (Mile High) third.
Stepto was delighted to be back on the racing scene after a six week injury lay off during March and April, which prevented her competing in the London Marathon.
The Marathon International had lost some fitness but approached the race with a degree of caution, maintaining a steady pace and winning by a comfortable margin.
Stepto's team mate, the up and coming Heidi Tregenza, racing for the first time post London, coped well with the challenging course, crossed the line in second place, with another long term injured runner, Mhairi Saville (Mounts Bay Harriers), making a successful return to competition in third position. Both team races were won by Cornwall AC.
