Thousands of people are expected to line the streets today to welcome the Queen to West Cornwall.

The Queen and Prince Philip will arrive at St Erth railway station and transfer to the branch line to St Ives – a trip regarded as one of the most picturesque in the world.

The monarch will then be driven to St Ives harbour to visit the RNLI lifeboat stat-ion.

The visit marks the start of an official appeal to raise £1 million for a launch and recovery vehicle for the town's new lifeboat.

The Queen will view the current lifeboat, including one named in hour of her daughter, The Princess Royal. She will then meet the volunteer team who run the station and their families.

Derek Hall, volunteer RNLI lifeboat operations manager at St Ives, said they were delighted to be welcoming the royal couple.

"We're extremely honoured to welcome Her Majesty The Queen to our lifeboat station, especially as she is the RNLI's patron, and to be able to introduce her to the many volunteers who maintain the charity's lifesaving tradition around the coast of St Ives.

"It's a truly wonderful way of thanking the families of our volunteers too for their support and commitment."

The Royal couple will then embark on a short walkabout along the seafront before heading to Tate St Ives to tour the building and enjoy a short reception.

After leaving St Ives, they will head to St Michael's Mount for lunch with the St Aubyn family before touring the castle.
