The mother of twins with a life-limiting disease has paid tribute to the "amazing" work of Children's Hospice South West. Cerwyn Burnett lost one of her sons, Bryn, to Krabbe Disease last November. Her other son, Reuben, has seen his condition worsen. Mrs Burnett and her family have received support from Children's Hospice South West and she will be carrying out a skydive to raise money for the charity later this year. Cerwyn, from St Mawes on the Roseland, said: ""In 2010 when they were just two years old my twin boys, Reuben and Bryn, were diagnosed with a life-limiting illness called Krabbe Disease." Krabbe Disease is a type of leukodystrophy - a rare disease that affects the cells of the brain - and during the last three years the boys' condition worsened at a rapid rate. "This left my boys with many complications and very little quality of life," said Cerwyn. Soon after the diagnosis the family were all invited to regularly use the facilities at Children's Hospice South West for respite holidays. Mrs Burnett said: "The times that we have spent at both Little Bridge House and now Little Harbour have made such a positive difference to all our family. We have nothing but gratitude and admiration for the charity and staff alike. "On the 29th of November last year, our youngest son Bryn sadly passed away. During the time of his passing we, as a family, stayed at Little Harbour. The support, comfort, care and understanding that we received, was amazing. I truly believe that we would not have coped without the love and support provided by the staff there." When he died, Bryn was laid in the special Starborn room giving his family the time and space to say their goodbyes in a peaceful, private, comforting and non-clinical environment. The care provided by staff during this difficult time included specialist one-to-one care for Reuben, sibling support for his two well sisters, bereavement counselling for the family and practical help and assistance with planning the funeral. Members of the care team also attended the funeral service to support the family through this and share some of their memories of Bryn's stays at Little Harbour. Cerwyn and her family continue to be cared for by the staff at Little Harbour, visiting for planned breaks with Reuben and their daughters, and helping them through their bereavement. The high standard of care and the devotion of staff has prompted Cerwyn to launch her own attempt to raise funds for Children's Hospice South West. On June 9 she will do a tandem skydive with her friend Ashley Taylor at Perranporth Airfield from 10,000ft. She said: "I want to do this as a token of gratitude for all the help we have and are receiving and also to help them to support other families in similar situations. "I am asking you all very kindly to help me to achieve this goal by making a donation to my Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/Cerwyn-Burnett. Thank you."
