Plymouth suffered a disappointing 56-36 defeat despite raising hopes of an away win by taking a two-point lead after four heats in their Premier League match at Edinburgh on Friday evening.
Skipper Cory Gathercole gave the Devils some early hope when he and impressive reserve Todd Kurtz scored a maximum 5-1 win over Claus Vissing and Jozsef Tabaka in heat four.
That saw Plymouth take a 13-11 lead, but it proved to be one of only two race wins for the Devils, who had to wait until heat 14 before Kurtz gave them their only other first place of the evening.
Craig Cook and Theo Pijper were both unbeaten for Edinburgh while Plymouth struggled to make any real impression with Kurtz top scoring on nine (paid 11) from six rides.
The Devils have a quick chance for revenge with the return match taking place at the St Boniface Arena on Saturday evening (May 18) (7.15pm).
Edinburgh: Craig Cook 15 (5 rides), Derek Sneddon 6 (4), Theo Pijper 14+1 (5), Max Fricke 1 (4), Claus Vissing 8+2 (4). Reserves: Mitchell Davey 5 (4), Jozsef Tabaka 7+2 (4).
Plymouth: Ty Proctor 6 (5), Chris Schramm 4+1 (4), Mark Lemon 7 (4), Ricky Kling 3+2 (4), Cory Gathercole 5 (4). Reserves: Jake Anderson 2 (3), Todd Kurtz 9+2 (6).
