Marazion residents furious with Cornwall Council over decision to close toilets

Marazion residents and councillors have slammed Cornwall Council's decision to mothball public toilets in the town. A number of concerned locals vented their fury at Marazion Town Council's meeting last Tuesday. The facilities in the town centre at Marazion Square have been closed. The Folly Field public conveniences are to remain open but these will be closed on weekdays during the winter months, while the facilities at station car park are going to become pay per use. Marazion postmistress Jane McColl said the situation was not good enough. She told the town councillors: "I have had so many complaints from locals, visitors who have come her for generations and ordinary visitors about where can they go to the toilet. "It beggars belief that Cornwall Council could have done this to Marazion the oldest town, the second most visited town in Cornwall and the fifth most visited in the Westcountry." Town councillor David Eddy called the decision "absolutely disgraceful", while town mayor, Derek Laity encouraged everyone to write to the unitary authority to register their anger. James Jacoby, the town clerk, said that a group of councillors, members of the chamber of commerce and staff from St Aubyn Estate were getting together to see if anything could be done. He said the council did not have enough money to fund the running of the toilets. Cornwall councillor for the area, Sue Nicholas was also present at the meeting and she said that she was one of the many councillors who fought against the closure of the toilets. She said: "If you have got a community going at the moment, that is going to be one of the ways of exploring the options available." Following a cut in funding by central government, Cornwall Council held a review of toilets in April 2011 and came up with a plan to close half its conveniences if town and parish councils wouldn't take them on. Since then the council has been in consultation with parish and town council about the future of toilets. A number of councils have refused to take them on while others like St Ives Town Council have agreed. The toilets in Marazion are among the ten in west Cornwall that have closed recently as a result of Cornwall Council cuts. These include toilets on Fore Street in Newlyn and at St Ives station car park. A spokeswoman for Cornwall Council said: "(Marazion) Town Council explored in some detail the options they had available to them in 2012 but sadly decided not to work in partnership with Cornwall Council to retain the same level of provision that has existed under previous financial arrangements. "The decision to close the toilets at Marazion Square was made to protect the facilities alongside the beach, play area and parking. "We informed Marazion Town Council in March 2013 that we would be unable to continue running the toilets at Marazion Square from April 15, but that we remain open to discussions with them over the future of the facilities."
