Padstow and St Mawes: pricey property by the sea

THE Cornish coastal havens of Padstow and St Mawes are among the five most expensive seaside places to buy a house in the UK. The average house in St Mawes will now set you back £369,224 according to the latest information from the Halifax, up 115% in the past decade. While a house in Padstow is even more expensive, with an average of £386,261 – up 93% since 1993. Prize for the most expensive town goes to Salcombe, in Devon, where the average gaff goes for a monster £570, 378, just slightly ahead of Sandbanks in Dorset. Sandbanks was for a long time the priciest british seaside town, but prices there have gone up by 46% in the past decade – a slower rate of increase than the other top spots. Second-home owners have helped push up property prices in prettier coastal areas. Martin Ellis, from the Halifax, said seaside towns offer "high quality of life and a healthy environment" "As a result, living by the coast can come at a price," he said.
