As the UK gears up to show its support for the Armed Forces, Falmouth will have a key role to play, as the Cornwall host town. A Spitfire and Lancaster bomber will be among the planes putting on aerial display, while on the ground veterans will parade through the town on June 22. The aim of the event is to be as interactive as possible, for the whole family and paying tribute to everyone involved with the services. Town manager Richard Gates said: "In the past the day has been relatively low key but this will not be the case this year. It promises to be a great day. Mayor Geoffrey Evans said: "I am sure Falmouth will give a great reception and hospitality that only Falmouth can provide." In the air there will be a Battle of Britain memorial flight featuring the iconic and historic Spitfire and Lancaster as well as displays by the Venom and Avro Anson. And on the water there will be a search and rescue display as well as two ships, the Royal Navy minesweeper HMS Brocklesby and RFA Lyme Bay to look around. Activities will be taking place throughout the town, with the key venues being the Moor, Prince of Wales Pier, Church Street car park and Events Square. There will be a whole host of vehicles to look at at each location, including a harrier cockpit, a life sized replica spitfire, a 10 tonne logistic vehicle and armoured personnel carrier. There is a chance to compete against Falmouth Platoon Army Cadets and Royal Naval Commandos team on the climbing wall, see unarmed combat displays and weapons displays. Music will be provided by the Military Wives Choir, AFC Bugles, Air Training Corps and Army Cadet Force Composite band and a free concert from the Royal Marine Band. The day will begin at 11am with a parade of veterans and standards led by RNAS Culdrose band at 11am from The Moor to Events Square. Here Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall Colonel Edward Bolitho will officially open the event at 11.30am. He said: "I very much support the concept of Armed Forces Day, honouring our brave and dedicated service personnel and their families and all who support them in their duties and acknowledge the contribution of veterans and cadets."
