An "exceptional" cookery student who lost both his mother and grandmother last year has been crowned Saltash Young Citizen of the Year. Aaron Bezant was nominated for the prestigious award by his tutors at Cornwall College and staff at the K3 Youth Centre, for his commitment, hard work, enthusiasm and determination towards his studies and community work. "I was really surprised, but proud, to have won this award," the 17-year-old said. "It was great to read the comments on my nomination from my tutors at college," he added. Tutors at the college and youth club, which Mr Bezant organises events and activities for, said the sudden and unexpected loss of both his mother and grandmother within months of each other last year did not deflect or deter him from his studies or his desire to help others. Micky Northfield from K3 said: "Aaron is an exceptional young person for whom nothing is too much trouble. He is a credit to himself and his devotion to the club and the young people he represents is something to be admired." Senior tutor at the Cornwall College Pat Lloyd described him as a model pupil. "Having worked with many students over 25 years I can honestly say Aaron is one of the few that really stands out. "He does so for his commitment, kindness and ability to become an excellent role model for others," she said. Mr Bezant said he enjoyed taking part in community activities in the town. "It has been a hard year but I have really enjoyed getting so involved with both my work and college and activities in the community," he said. Head of Cornwall College Saltash Andrew Counsell congratulated the youngster on his award. "Aaron has led by example with his fellow students and has become a well- known and liked face within the campus," he said. "He has worked tirelessly on his course, achieving great results, and has remained positive throughout what has been a tough year."
