PEDAL power across the English Channel has drummed up £9,000 for Cornwall Hospice Care. A team of cyclists from Ocean Housing set out from London early on Friday, June 7, and arrived in Paris three days and 229 miles later on Sunday, June 9. "We were all extremely relieved to reach the Eiffel Tower," said Ocean's chief executive David Renwick. "It has been a real challenge for the Ocean team, particularly cycling in high temperatures, as we haven't exactly had the chance to train in warm weather this spring. "But every mile has been worth it to raise money for this life-changing local charity. "Most of us know someone who has benefited from the dedication and commitment of the hospice staff. It is this knowledge that drives you on when every muscle in your body is aching and inspires you to raise as much money as you possibly can." It costs about £5,500 to provide a hospice bed for just one week, meaning Cornwall Hospice Care has to raise £7.5 million every year. "I'm so proud of everyone for completing the challenge, and for raising much-needed funds and awareness for the charity," said charity event officer Amy Barnie. "The group has been great to work with and I hope they can all take some life-long memories with them from this adventure."
