An electric pole caught fire during a repair in Newlyn yesterday evening.
Western Power engineers were working on a faulty cable when it caught light at around 7pm.
Penzance Fire Station responded to a call soon after, and sent a team of five to tackle the flames.
"They [engineers] were working on the fault and the next thing they knew it was on fire," said a fire station spokesperson.
"We used dry powder to put it out".
Following the incident, electricians at the site continued with repairs.
At one time 54 homes and a set of traffic lights were without power.
It is thought that a damaged cable caused a fuse to blow, which in turn resulted in the pole catching light.
