Falmouth's Sea Shanty Festival is in full swing this weekend as it celebrates its 10th anniversary.

The event, which takes place in aid of the RNLI, kicked off at 6.30pm last night with 39 groups spread across 20 venues throughout the town.

This summer the festival has seen singers from Canada, France, the Netherlands and across the UK descend on Falmouth's many stages, pubs and cafes.

Town manager Richard Gates, who also chairs the organising committee, said the feelings among visitors felt special.

"It's been really good - yesterday was a challenge with the weather but it was still really busy," he said.

"Everyone filled up the pubs and it created a great atmosphere. Today it's been sunny so people have been out and about.

"There's lots of vibrancy and everyone seems to be enjoying it," he added.

This year the event is dedicated to three people who were heavily involved in the festival in recent times.

Before the entertainment began everyone stopped to remember Anne Hunt, who was treasurer of the festival's committee, as well as Trevor Grills and Paul McMullen of the well-known Fisherman's Friends shanty singers.

Mr Grills, who was a singer, and the band's manager Mr McMullen tragically passed away at a freak accident at a venue in Guildford, Surrey, earlier this year.

"It was fitting - we had a minutes silence in their memory before things started," said Mr Gates.

The Sea Shanty Festival has seen the addition of a fashion show, and is also running in tandem with the Falmouth Classics regatta over the course of the weekend.
