A HISTORIC tin mining village has been brought bang up to date with an internet injection.
Superfast Cornwall has overcome infrastructure obstacles to bring superfast optic broadband to Coombe, in the Clay Country, near St Austell.
The village was part of a programme to make Cornwall one of the most connected rural areas in the world and now about 80 homes and businesses in Coombe can enjoy download speeds of up to 80 megabits per second.
Residents previously had limited access to broadband, and welcomed the news.
Des Curnow, Cornwall Councillor for the St Stephen-in-Brannel parish, said: "The arrival of superfast fibre broadband is great news for the residents of Coombe.
"Not only will they be able to access internet services much more quickly, but a more reliable, faster service offers opportunities such as working from home and will support those already running businesses in the area."
Nigel Ashcroft MBE, Superfast Cornwall programme director for Cornwall Development Company, said: "A tremendous effort was made by the engineering team to deliver fibre to residents and businesses in Coombe.
"Their perseverance in innovating and troubleshooting against a multitude of infrastructure challenges across Cornwall has been paramount to the success of the programme and is testament to the progress we're achieving so far."
Superfast Cornwall, a partnership between the European Union, BT and Cornwall Council, expects to make fibre optic broadband available to 95 per cent of premises in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
The roll-out will be complete in 2014.
